I just bought a .17 HMR Savage heavy barrel for plinking and shooting small varmits.  I am looking at either a Muller 4-16x50 Illuminated or the Simmons Aetec 3.8-12x44 Iluminated scopes.   I prefer to have the illuminated recticle for evening shooting (eyes are not as good as the once were.   I don't want to spend over $200.00 seems too steep since the gun is only a plinker and cost that amount to buy.  But I would like a decent scope.  If anyone could comment on either or both it would be very much appreciated.

ALSO, while it is not illuminated I was also looking at the Millett Gold 4-16x44 so if anyone can comment on that as well it may help with the decision process.

Thanks for your help

That is a good choice, but I am looking for a little more magnification than 3-9.  Thanks for the suggestion.

mueller is an awesome scope for the money, you wont find a better scope for under $200 in that magnification range.

Steer clear of the Millett, think BSA quality.  I am not a fan of simmons.  Mueller is not a bad scope for the money if you want an illuminated reticle.

That is true.  I chose the Mueller over Millet because it uses Japanese glass and has more consistant quality.

Thanks guys for the help.  I appreciate it.  Couple other questions.  What about Alpen scopes?  I've looked through some of their bino's (Apex and Shasta Ridge) and they seemed pretty good does anyone have any experience with the rifle scopes?

I noticed most people said stay away from Simmons, however, I looked around the forums and many people give the Aetec pretty good comments?? What is the difference between say that line (Aetec) and the 44 series??

Thanks again

Alpen makes excellent products.  Their scopes are very good and I am not sure that they aren't brand labeled 4200 Elites.  I do not like any simmons scopes.

Since recoil is not an issue on a 17HMR..... I decided on the BSA Sweet 17 (3-12x AO) for my Savage 93  bull barrel in stainless.

The scope is very clear and the AO is a great asset.  For varmits and plinking it's a great combo. For the price it can't be beat. Just my opinion.

I would recommend the Burris Ballistic Plex reticle as it can easily be used for .17 bullet drop.

The Burris Ballistic Plex reticle was designed to work with just about any caliber and comes with detailed instructions and decals, that depict what the lines represent for different calibers, that you can stick on your rifle stock.  Here is what the hold overs work out to be for .17 Hornady Magnum 17 grain Hornady VMax bullet moving at 2550 feet per second.

As you can see it is very simple to shoot any where from 100 - 300 yards with this reticle.  The Burris Ballistic Plex reticle is available in several scopes.

  1. 2-7x36 Matte Finish, Short Mag for $259.95
  2. 3-9x32 Matte Finish, Compact for $269.95
