I'm going to be getting a scope for long range/extreme long range varminting.  Pretty sure I've narrowed it down to these and I'm leaning Nightforce.  Don't want to spend more than $2,000.  Thoughts on these two, or a better one that I don't know of?  Thank you.

The new Sightron S3 is the best optics line made in Japan.Nightforce is using lenses made in Japan. From what people I shoot with say is this is a better scope than any Nightforce scope.

If your thinking varmit rig, get the BR nightforce, better glass, (one less set of elements), better reticle choices. Need to decide if you want a true tactical scope-- if so (tactical pd gun?) nxs. not sure what extreme long range varmit caliber is. Both the leo3 and the conquest 6.5x20s are good choices.

Sorry, I should have clarified, by varmint I specifically mean coyotes and by extreme I mean out to a possible 1200 to 1500 yards.  I'll be dialing most shots.  I like the illuminated reticle on the NXS and the both have side focus which I really like.

Isn't Kowa the best Japanese optics currently available?

I have no ezperience with Sightron but have been a happy Nightforce owner for several years.  The glass isn't the very best, but the scope is very durable, very repeatable, and I've never missed a shot because the glass wasn't good enough.

I've seen many, many tac guns and long-range BR guns, I too see far more nightforce than Sightron.  That isn't to say Sightron isn't as good, I just can't say, no experience and I haven''t seen many.

From what I know, I'd go Nightforce.

I think the main reason you see more NF's than Sightrons is also the fact that the NF's have been offered in target rifle magnifications longer than Sightrons.  IMO NF's are too heavy for the matches I attend.  The vast majority of benchrest matchs I attend are dominated by Luepold's.  Either the new comp. series or the old BR36's.  In a game where ounces count the NF's weigh as much as a Leupold Competition series and a Leupold BR36 combined.  The 1" Sightron 36's are very popular too being lightweight like the Leupy's.

You're undoubtedly referring to short range Benchrest instead of 1000 yard Benchrest.  Leupold dominates in the former; NF dominates in the latter.

Yep.  600yds 300yds or 200yds are the common matches in this part of the country.  10 1/2lb or 13lb class.  Most folks would rather have that extra 20oz in the barrel rather than glass.

NEWS FLASH sightron does not dominate the scope industry as a matter of fact at my range on any given day I have never seen a Sightron , and yes I look at everything there 2 or 3 times before I leave?   HMMMMMMM!

NF glass I think is good enough. Since they are a dominate force in the 1000yd benchrest I think that speaks well of their glass. But since you are talking about long range varminting I would go with the NF since their E/W adjustments are excellent. You will probably be dialing in corrections and returning to zero a number of times so repeatability will be very important.Their repeatability is why I own several NF scopes. Sightron may very well have excellent E/W adjustments, but I do not have any experience with that.

I have experienced more reliable adjustments from Nightforce. That is one of their strengths--along with sheer ruggedness.

The lenses in Nightforces are made by Light Optical. The lenses in Sightrons are not, though they are made by another good Japanese company.

Someone send me an S3 (6-24, preferable) and I'd do a thorough comparison side-by-side with a NF 5.5-20.

I'll include pictures and everything!

We'll settle this!

Kickboxer is wanting scopes for testing also.     His test is more of a destructive test. A Lott of a destructive test.

"I promise not to destroy the scope": does that help.
