Hi. think I am down to two scopes:
Sightron SIII 6-24x50 LR MD (SIII62450LRMD)
and a...
Leupold Mark4 6.5-20x50 LR/TM1(54680)
Does anyone have any recent dealings w/ the Sightron or Leupold that can help me please?
Thanks in advance.

Both are fine scopes. I'd opt for the lesser expensive of the two. Leupold has the reputation behind it, but you will pay for that. The SIII is a very good scope though, and you won't regret the purchase.

Forget the Leupold, get the S3, great scope at a great price. |

I had a Sightron SIII and Leupold Mark 4 for a while on my rifles. Took the scopes off and did a little comparrison look-through on the same magnification.
I hate trying to rate glass since everything is so subjective, but I will say this: It took a lot of looking from one scope to the next, bouncing my head back and forth between the to, to putting them up to my eyes like binoculars and then switching hands. I finally gave the clarity and contrast to the Sightron, but there wasn't much of a difference. My dad at the range said that he preferred the Sightron as well when he went from shooting one of my rifles to the other, but I see where it is pretty difficult to substantiate that opinion when one gets up from their position and walks a few feet down before getting behind another optic.
When it came to adjustments, both scope tracked and repeated well, a hell of a lot better than that Countersniper that Craig Boddington sold his soul over to hock in G&A. I will definitely give the Sightron SIII the edge in the adjustments departmetn though because each click was more tactile and felt exact, while the Leupolds was a bit more mushy, not unlike the older SS scopes before you cleaned the O-ring.
Overall I don't really have any major complaint about either scope. The Sightron is a heck of a deal for the money, but the Leupold's TMR reticle is what originally caught my eye. Both worked great for me.

Thank you for taking the time to respond Diggler1833. I think my hesitation on the SIII was more from a smaller company than Leupold standpoint than anything. Is CS any good? Does warranty transfer? Longevity? etc. While the savings is great sometimes in the long run I didnt really save when all factors are considered. That is how my mind thinks anyway. Thanks again.

Lifetime warranty, just fill out the card and send it in when you get your scope. Never had to use CS, Leupold would be hard to beat on that one. I would expect longevity to be just as good as any other scope in that price range, if not better.

I think some of it depends on use. A police department would be more likely to authorize a Leupold Mk4 for a sniper rifle than a Sightron. The sightron is quite a bit cheaper and a fine target scope but not really thought of by LE as a tactical scope. If your need is tactical go on up to Nightforce or Premier if you can possibly do so. Having said that I have two Leupold Mk 4 scopes that are LE use. If on the other hand you can live with less magnification the Super Sniper 3-9x42 is an absolute bargain on a true tactical scope.

Have both scopes. Prefer the Leupy myself.
S-3 is a great buy for the price though. Optically, compared to a VX-3 (not the III - I didn't have the Mark 4 with me on this afternoon) the Leupold was noticeably better beyond 1K when looking at antelope in a semi-glare and in non-glare situations. I had a friend who had neither optic and he drew the same conclusion. I may have just got a S-3 with less than typical glass, but I was not impressed. All other aspects of the S-3 worked great. Even took a pd with it beyond 1K. Reticle is to heavy for my preference. Hard to make a comparison with just one scope, but that has been my experience. |

You also have to keep in mind that there was an earlier generation S3 that was not nearly as good as the current one. ILya

Good question, and I have been asked that, and I have the current version to my knowledge. Also, I got it directly from Sightron too with the expressed purpose of comparing.
Maybe I need to contact them and see what they say. |
