Yesterday a buddy of mine was telling me about a scope for sale in our local paper and asked me if I thought it was as good of a deal as the guy claimed it to be.  He said a guy was selling a scope for $350 and that the guy said it was worth over $800.  He started reading it and as soon as he said Sightron SIII 6-24X50 my eyes perked up.  Then it got even better.  The scope comes with Badger Ordinance rings!  I called the guy immediately and told him I wanted to come look at the scope.  It's a 2008 model, or at least that's when he purchased it, and he has the original reciept from Midway for both the scope and rings.  He said he lapped the rings in and that the scope had been on an AR in .223 for a while and on a Savage in .22-250.  He's selling a lot of other things like his reloading equipment as well due to money problems.  Anyways, I told him to hold the scope and that I would come back with the money tomorrow or the day after to buy it.  The scope looked brand new, had Butler Creek caps, box, and sunshade with it.  It has the duplex reticle and I was wondering how much it would cost to replace that with either a dot or mil-dot reticle?
My main question is, how much is all of this actually worth?  I know it's a great deal, but would you consider it amazing or just good?  It will be going on my Rem 700VS in .22-250 for varminting and target shooting.
Also, what would be a good Base for those rings for ~$75 or less?

Also, I believe the Badger Ordnance rings are the ultra high (AR) style rings.  Will those sit too high on my 700 in anyones opinion?

Assuming everything is as it presented, it is a great deal.

The scope sells for about $800 new and the rings are $150 or so.

Be advised, if he lapped the rings on his rifle, they may need lapping on any future rifle.  (The highs will be way too high on a bolt gun, I'd sell them somewhere, they will bring in $125 or so, assuming he didn't ruin them when he lapped them.)

EGW makes a decent base, less than $75.

Not sure on the reticle swap.  Since it is such a good deal, I'd leave the reticle and enjoy the scope as is.

Great find, be sure all is as it seems.

Sightron S3 went through a redesign a couple of years ago.  Make sure you are getting the re-designed version since it is considerably better.

The easiest way to tell visually which it is, is by looking at the eyepiece.

Michael; Small world: I saw that same ad in my local MV Ohio paper! I'd have called him immediately if I hadn't recently bought 2 new scopes. Thought about buying and re-selling, at least the rings, but wondered, as koshkin points out, about the age...

Haha, yes, I live in Danville (red head who works at the Lyons Den gas station if you ever go in there at night) and called the guy immediately after my buddy showed me the ad.  He was very nice and takes great care of his equipment.  He just decided to get out of the "tactical" game and is selling his .223/AR stuff.  The scope is unfortunatly the older design, but I bought it anyways and believe it was well worth it with the rings included.  I needed a good scope to put on my .22-250 and it seemed perfect.  I plan on selling the rings or may just stick them in the back of the safe until I have the funds to get an AR.

Lewwetzel, he has quite a few other items he is selling at very low prices including a lot of .223 ammo (heavier stuff like TAP and some others) as well as a lot of reloading equipment and an XDM 9mm with 7 mags and a tac light for $450.  So feel free to give him a call if you're in the market for any of that.

And thanks for the replies guys.  I wouldn't have looked twice at the ad had I not visited this site and learned about Sightron.  Been a member here for several years now, but forgot my old account name and password.  You people have cost me some money though!  Bought a Nitrex TR2 just a couple of weeks ago because of forums like this.  Hope the scope lives up to its rep even though it is the older model.

The Sightron SIII's have an etched glass reticle and cannot be replaced.

Thanks for that info waska.  I didn't really plan on changing it, but was just curious in case I decided to.  I wanted a thin reticle and from the pics of the mil dot reticles in the SIII's that I've seen they looked thinner than the plex. It seems just fine for varminting now that I've had the time to look through it at a distance with the power cranked up.  I couldn't tell for sure at the guys house because he lived in town and I only looked though the scope at low power then. The adjustments are very tactile and somewhat stiff compared to one of the reviews I read on here from one of the optics masters, who said his seemed too easy to turn (don't remember which one off the top of my head).  They don't feel quite as nice as the Nitrex I just got, but I don't care as long as it tracks good.

I think you will like the scope. Mine tracks great. I am just getting back into shooting after a 30+ year sabbatical. I shoot a 300-600 yard league and use the SIII 8.5-32 LRD. The only thing I don't care for is the dot. I am going to get a 10-50 fine Cross hair for next year and use the dot for prairie doggin. Enjoy your great find.
