I'm getting ready to pick up a scope to use for 100 to 300 yd. shooting with my AR15.  It will also be used for some deer hunting more than likely.

I'm looking at either a really nice used VXII 3x9x40 or a new Sightron S2 3x9x40.

Please let me know your thoughts on these two choices.

Thanks!

where are you at, you sure its legal to use 223??? i beleae 223 is a little light for deer, and i beleave they deserve a little more humane kill. myself, i like the VXII.

I'm in Nebraska and 223 is legal.  I'm also hunting does based on my permit and area and I have chosen a very good bullet that is known to be good for deer in an AR.  I also plan on hunting within my limitations so I would not take any shots longer than approx. 100 yds.  Plenty close enough to ensure a clean kill.  Next year, though, I do plan on upgrading to at least a 6.8spc.

What do you like better about the VXII?

ok, 223 oughta work then... just dont use a varmint bullet, it will blow up on a rib, and never make it to the vitals. the VXII is covered my the best warranty in the business, and is one tough scope.

Cory, if you ever decide to hunt deer sized game with a 223, keep in mind that Black Hills sells 223 ammo with 60gr Nosler Partition.  From what I hear that is a surprisingly effective load despite a small caliber.

My kids shot deer in the Texas Hill Country for a couple of years with the .223 using Winchester Power Point Plus.  Killed 'em dead, but those were awfully small deer (field dress 100 lbs if your lucky).  Wouldn't really recommend it in Nebraska on those big bodied deer though, but if that's all you have go slay 'em.

In my opinion the SI is definitely a better scope than the VariXII. A closer comparison would be the SII and the VariXIII.
