I have been looking for a mil-dot scope for the usual punching paper and blowing up milk jugs out to 400 yards.  It will also be taken along on the occasional p-dog trip for the long range shooting at some live targets.  As a student money is an issue and I would like to have variable power.  So my options is limited.  I was looking and found the Sightron S1 3-9 x40 mildot for a very reasonable price.  It almost seems to low for a good scope.  I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this line of scopes.  Also do you think this magnification will work, I have learned that as a general rule people like to much magnification and generally on Prairie dog shoots I rarely turn it up beyond 12.  Any other suggestions are appreciated as far as other models.  Just to get it out of the way, the $299 for the SS is just a tad over my limit.
Thanks.
Nick

By the way, the rifle will be either a Remington VS or Savage tactical in 308.

Many on here have good thinks to say about Sightron. I don't think you will be happy with 3-9 on a .308. I just tested a new Nikon 6-18 X 40 BuckMaster Side Focus today on my Savage .308 Tactical and I believe it is the perfect match for long range. I do have a 6-24 X 42mm Sightron on order, but it has not arrived. The Nikons are on sale at SWFA. You might give them some consideration. They are costing $200-$350 for last years models.

Koshkin is our Sightron expert and is quite fond of them. I believe there is a significant difference between their different models and that the SII is the way to go with this line of scopes.  Sorry to hear that the Super Sniper is out of your budget range. I am quite fond of my Super Sniper and am saving up for my next one.  Nikon scopes have great glass and the Monarch line is quite good but in the same price range as the SS. You might consider these.
