I just ordered a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308. I have sitting on my shelf a Sightron SII Big Sky 6-24x42 that I would like to put on the Rem as soon as it arrives next week.

Sightron specs show 60 MOA elevation adjustment for my Big Sky, 30 up and 30 down. I realize there are many things to consider, but on average how far out is 30 up going to get me on a normal base? Do I need a 20MOA base to get any meaningful distance, say 500-600 yards, or can I get by with a flat base to start with?

Seems like I should know these things, but this will be my first experience with anything bigger than a .243, so as usual I'm still learning.

Thanks for any help/advice -- I can use it all.

If the scope ends up right in the middle of the adjustment 30moa will get to 800ish yards.

A 20 MOA base would be a good idea but if you want to mount it and see if you have 20 MOA left that's ok. Another thing to note is scopes have a higher chance of breaking if your working all the way against its max adjustment.

Thanks.  I think I'll try Talley L/W medium one piece(s) first. They have worked well for me on my Rem 700 CDL .243. I didn't know 30 up would get me anywhere near 800 yds since I've never had a rifle that would shoot that far before. It will take me a while to work up to that, much less any farther.

I appreciate the information.
