I've got an s2 3-9X42.  I've had it to the range only once so far and am still breaking in the rifle and sighting in the scope.  The glass is very bright and clear and so far I'm satisfied with it.  The real test will be actual hunting in the field with it.

My question is, what are the differences between the S2 and S3, and how does the S3 compare to other brands of scopes, in that price range, and irrespective of price?

S2 and S3 are optically similar.  S3 has a slight edge in resolution (due to slightly larger erector lenses), but it is not very substantial.  Light transmission is about the same.  Adjustment accuracy and repeatability are also about the same (which is a good thing, since that is one of Sightron's biggest strengths).

From a production standpoint, I have heard of a few more problems with S3 than with S2, but that was a while ago, I think Sightron managed to get those issues under control.

From a bang for the buck standpoint, I think S2 is a better deal.  S2 gets you nearly the same performance for less money.  If you are bent on a 30mm tube, S3 is still a pretty good way to go.  It's primary competition comes from Burris Black Diamond and XTR scopes.  If you do not necessarily need a MilDot reticle, Nikon Monarch Gold is another good option.

The problem with these scopes is that they are already getting into a price range that is not too far off from 30mm IOR and Meopta Meostar scopes, which offer better glass.

Love my only Sightron SII.  I will defer to Koshkin on the details.  But I agree.
