I've narrowed down my search to the following scopes:

Sightron SII Big Sky 4.5 - 14x44 MD

OR

Vortex Viper 6.5 - 20x50 PA

It will be going on a 300 win mag set up for long range western big game.  I like the features on both scopes (slightly favoring the Vortex on the whole), but the eye relief on the Vortex has me a little concerned (3.1 - 3.3).  How much is enough eye relief?

Any thoughts, experience, comments on either of these scopes?

Optics may be a tie, for hunting I would buy the Sightron Big Sky since it has the coatings that prevent rain from fogging up the scope. The Vortex Viper is my pick for target/long range shooting. Both scopes are good but both are meant for shots at longer ranges. The 6.5-20x50 from experience may be too much scope for hunting.I would prefer the 4.5-14 range.

Thanks Randall - makes sense.

Any opinions on how much eye relief is enough for a 300 win mag?

I own several 300WMs, I like them allot, I reload my own stuff, and I wouldn't consider a scope with less than 3.5 inches.  If the gun is less than 9 pounds, 3.5 is the absolute minimum I would consider, and would probably look for something closer to 4.

On recoil, from an unsupported position, you will get bit by a 300, they kick a weeeee bit - not intolerable, not uncontrollable, but you'detter be ready for it; many a cut foreheads resulted from short eye releif scopes on guns that jump when lit off.

The lighter the gun (in a 300), the further you want to be from the ocular when it goes, "Boom!"

Thanks for the input Coolaid.  That sounds very reasonable to me.

I currently have an older leupold on my rifle with pretty ample eye relief and it's never been an issue for me.  I'm looking to upgrade and want to be careful not to go too low.  If I stick with the 3.5 as a minimum that weeds out one of the scopes I was looking at.
