Hi all,

I'm on a shoestring hunt for a compact scope for a featherweight 223 survival carbine. I'm trying to decide between a Sightron Si 2.5x32sg and a Pentax Lightseeker 2.5x25sg, both costing less than a hundred dollars.

I am aware that these are shotgun scopes and that the short parallax configuration is not ideal for a centerfire rifle, but then again this carbine is not able to deliver sub MOA groups @ 200 yards anyway, and what i want is mainly compactness, brightness and a decent build quality.

i've noticed that the pentax has a considerably larger FOV @ 100 yards. on the other hand i like the sightron rectile - it looks more like a conventional rifle rectile.

any input on the pros and cons of these scopes? which has the better optics? i hear they are made in japan but i find it hard to believe at this price point? any feedback appreciated!

Both these scopes have been discontinued.

The Sightron SI 2.5X was made in Japan and originally, it probably sold for around $125 - $150.

The Pentax Lightseeker 2.5X was made in the USA by Burris. I have a 2004 catalog from a nameless competitor that has it for $250. Other Lightseeker models seem to be pretty much rebadged Burris Signatures.

I used a Leupold shotgun scope on a rifle for years with absolutely no problems. Longest shot was around 160 yards, but there's no reason it wouldn't have worked at longer ranges.

I'd go with the Pentax. I think either of them would be a very good choice for your your purpose and for the money.

thanks for the input - *very* helpful! i was leaning towards getting the sightron from Big A for $55 shipped, but based on your advice i went with the pentax instead. - $62 to my door from a mom and pop shop out on the west coast.

thanks again!
