This is a question long unanswered for me.  When sighting in at 100 yards it has been said to zoom in to the highest setting on your scope, lets use 9 for example on 3x9-40 scope.  Once the rifle has been zeroed using the 9th setting can you use the other settings 3 through 8 with the same point of impact ?,,Ive been told no on more than one occassion but it just doesnt make sense to me since i thought they were for zooming only. I've been afraid to remove my setting from 9 on my old scope for fear of losing my zero.

in the 3x9 range you won't see much change, however sfp scopes to exhibit the effect of raising the bullet impact with a decrease in power. this is the basis of leo BAS system and varmit reticle. usually it takes a pretty good drop out to 500 yrds and a scope of descriminating at this range to tell the difference. A much bigger question to me would be if your scope showed problems, if if would be due to this effect, or just a reg. run of the mill 3x9

If you're using a good quality scope, its zero shouldn't vary through out the powers. What's the point of having a variable scope if you can´t use the different settings?

In a low quality scope you can expect zero changing. If that happens, you have to keep it allawys in the same X  (or get something better!)

the low quality scope has points of impact change due to other reasons than inherent in the sfp designs.

the amount of error depends on the gun, and how accurate the load/gun are. grouping at 100 yds is just a long pistol shot. most shooters would not be able to pick up on it-- if the gun, the load or the scope was the problem. don't worry about it just go have fun.

I have to agree with Dale, go have fun.  This is getting bad, Dale and I are agreeing on too much.
