My budget is $500. I'd rather have something decent now and be prepared and then upgrade later if I still feel it's necessary.

Is the vortex 1-6x strike eagle the same scope as the primary arms 1-6x acss but with a different reticle? I found both of them for exactly the same price with ADM recon-x mount. With identical prices(with that mount), which is the better buy?

I'm also considering the Vortex PST 1-4x if the glass is significantly better and it's worth the added cost and losing the 2x. The reticle looks a little nicer than the strike eagle.

I've also thought about just getting an aimpoint PRO because I've heard such good things and its within my budget. I worry that it would be useless for hunting though. I don't really like the idea of a magnifier.

The goal is versatility, one rifle to grab and go. Ideally it would be good from CQB out to medium range and capable of putting food on the table in SHTF scenario. Thanks for any advice.

if you want it for an AR id go for the vortex ... aimpoint pro is descent but like you say, its not optimal for longer ranges... the vortex has the reticle burned into the glass, so if the electronic dies its still usable.

having tried various scopes i have to say, nothing compares to the vortex, its also versatile enough to sit on pretty much everything, from a bolt action rifle or AR to a 10/22. if you can only own 1 scope, id go with one of the vortex scopes. i dont know the strike eagle well enough though to say anything about the quality but the PST 1-4 that i tried is superb, so i want one too.

I would probably pick the SWFA SS 1-4x over the Vortex pst. I have seen a few of those and honestly wasn't impressed with the glass. But i am a bit biased as i have a SS HD 1-4x and a Accupoint 1-4x which box have great glass.

The SS1-4x is getting great reviews. http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-1-4x24-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P78365.aspx

There is also the trijicon MRO redot that looks pretty nice. Its under $500.

I have hunted and shot whitetails with a 41 magnum topped with an ultradot red dot for near 15 years out to 100 yards and also out to 150ish yards with a rifle and a 2MOA aimpoint. Don't know your range of hunting but if its under 150 yards its hard to beat an aimpoint. I can only recall two times I made bad misses but I cant blame the aimpoint for them. magnification wouldn't have helped.

I like the aimpoint scopes but the down side is they are not clear like a trijicon illuminated optic so in really low light there is a difference. With a 42 mm scope 6x or lower will be the brightest and the clear  glass can be an advantage at dusk.

I am a firm believer that a true SHTF weapon cannot have a battery powered optic.

Aimpoint has a crazy battery life, but still has a battery life.  Trijicon reflex is a great option, as is a traditional magnifying optic.  For all around use, I prefer a 1-4 or 1-6 for a rifle that will see hard use and might be needed in a really bad situation.
My go-to 223 has an SS3-9 with an RMR offset, that is best of both worlds, but can be a budget busting setup.

Then again, if the S really does H the F, do you really want to have skimped on the one peice of gear that will save you?

Were it me and really needing a SHTF optic on a $500 budget, I would go with a Trijicon RMR or Reflex2.  The reflex2 is in your budget.
