Yes, this might seem like buyers remorse at first glance but no this is not the case.  I just put a new VX3 on my mtn rifle, the 2.5-8x36.  I've had it on and been shooting for a couple months.  No complaints, it's a good combination, but I remember having a 3-9x40 Conquest that just kicked butt.  Now I'm thinking of trading the Leupold for a 2.5-8x32 Conquest(which I thought about buying in the first place).  I REALLY like the etched Z-plex and the black as coal appearance.  I was hunting one sunny day during our doe only season and the Leupold turned colors every time I was looking through the scope at almost any angle to the sun, which bugs the heck out of me.  What do you think?  It'll cost me about a $100 to switch.

Thanks,
BAdger

Yes, an etched reticle is nice and if the reticle changing colors bothers you that much then YOU should get the Zeiss which will have just as good if not better optics and constant eye relief at all power settings. If you dont mind how thick the Bushnell 4200 FIREFLY RETICLE is then you can still have a jet black reticle for less money I think. I have a 4200 Firefly and while it is very thick in the outer posts it stays just as black if not more against any background and is more contrasty in low light than even an etched reticle. I believe the lumincent coating on the reticle wire absorbs light to make the reticle glow but in daylight it does not allow any reflection at all.

I think the Conquest is a little heavier than the Leupy.  That might be a concern if you're worried about weight.   But as far as optics goes... you're right the Conquest kicks but.  I have a 2.5x8x32 Conquest on my X-Bolt and LOVE it.

Thanks for the reply Dave.  I'm gonna keep it within the Zeiss or Leupold.  I went for the fit of the Leupold on my particular setup.  But, besides durability and size/weight, the reticle to me is right there one of the most important features to me.  That color turning reticle on the Leupold is all I can say bad about it, and many would say who cares.  The new VX3's are good scopes.

Etched or not, a Conquest reticle will take on a metallic appearance too depending on the direction of a light source entering the scope.  Etched reticles are filled with a chrome material.  I have etched reticle scopes from Zeiss (both Victory and Conquest), Swarovski, S&B, Kahles, and IOR, and ALL of them will take on the silver/copper metallic appearance under certain lighting conditions, mainly light entering from behind the scope.

I've never understood why this is such a big deal, really.  Has it ever prevented anyone from making a shot?  Under circumstances where the reticle really needs to be black -- low light -- all reticles are.

Optically, I think Conquest and VX-3 are essentially equal, so I don't know that you'd be gaining much by spending more money to trade out to the Conquest.  Both are fine scopes.

I'd keep the VX-3 and be happy myself.

Didn't see your post mag shooter thanks for your opinion.  I get what your saying Rifledude.  That Z-plex just gives me all the confidence when I'm aiming.

BTW Rifledude, it's funny the thin crosshairs always stay black on my leupy just the thicker duplex hairs turn colors.

Depending on the type of rifle you have, the Leupold has a much smaller ocular that allows better clearance if working a bolt action for example. Something to consider.

Yea Roy, the Leupold is a darn near perfect fit for my mnt. rifle.  I could be getting away from that in the Zeiss.  I also prefer the 36mm objective over a 32mm.  Would my eyes tell a difference? - not very likely.  I would like to get a 3-9x36 Z3 Swaro to tell you the truth, but that's pretty much a pipe dream these days.

Thanks for the replies,
Badger

I have both brands you are talking about and really, with the glass as close as these are, I'd stick with the Leupold. When it comes time to shoot that animal you will not notice what color the reticle is! I just got done with my elk hunt and could not tell you for sure if I was shooting from my shooting sticks or standing when I killed my bull! I know I started out shooting off the sticks, but found an empty brass 10 feet forward of the sticks, what color was the reticle???? It must have been there as it was a 250 yard shot running. During this hunt the weather was rain, snow or mixed and I was just glad to see the reticle. By the way I used a 4200 with Rainguard and it was probably more important than the color of the reticle. Leupold has a rain lens for your scope and I would buy it, plus the flip up cover!

Thanks for the input.  I'm gonna stay with the Leupold.  I gain more by staying with this scope than switching I believe.  Again, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the new VX3's to anyone.  You get alot of scope for this price point, in either Leupold or Zeiss flavors.

The new Leupold VX3 is a very good scope.I used it this past weekend hunting whitetail deer and was happy with it's performance.I would take the Zeiss Conquest over the VX3.I think the Zeiss has better optics than the VX3.

I like the Optics of the 3-9 Conquest over my VX3 3.5-10.  Shooting them back to back at the range there's no question the Conquest is superior.  However I like the VX3 in every other way.  Size, weight, smoother clicks, aesthetics, better customer service.

Having used the Zeiss CS personally, I found it to be exceptional as well.
Not sure it's "better" than Leupolds, but they replaced a Conquest for and turned it around in less than 2 weeks between the time I shipped and the new unit returned to me.

My only experience with Zeiss was 3 calls to get a turret cap.  One of mine came with a cap that was missing the "Z" sticker on the cap.  I called twice before someone actually put the order in.  My calls were several weeks apart.  I wasn't rushing them.  The reps were not nearly as polite as the Leupold reps I've talked to.   I felt they thought I was nitpicking.

Thanks for the pic magshooter.  Nice.  If I wasn't a one rifle hunter these days I get a conquest, keep the VX-3, then go from there.
