A friend of mine has gotten in some credit card trouble and is selling his rifle and scope.  He has a Savage 300 WSM with Fluted bore barrel that is free floated.  It also has a Ziess Conquest 6.5-20x50 on it.  He offered to sell it to me for $950.  Should i buy this rifle and scope?

Sounds like a fair price if it's in pristine condition.  How many rounds have been put through it?  Any nicks, scratches, etc.?

He's only put 2 boxes of 180 grain ballistic tips threw the gun.  The gun and scope are in perfect condition.

We have established that it is a bargain but the question is do you want a 300 WSM.  Good balistics fast bullet expensive factory ammo more reasonable if you reload. If you are planning on hunting or target shooting at distance it might be good. Also note this cartridge has sa huge muzzle blast and significant recoil.  The .308 and the 30-06 are much more plesant to shoot and the 300 Win Mag has higher availability of ammo plus you can use heavier bullets in the 300 Win Mag. I have one of each so if you like it buy it but I would plan on reloading 180 gr only for it.

At the price mentioned it's almost like buying the scope and getting the rifle for free as these are expensive scopes.

I would buy it, take the scope and sell the rifle.

I agree.  The savage is a good rifle, but the caliber at hand has good points and bad points.  The scope is great.  I personally would much more prefer the 300 win mag, and the ballistics are not that much behind the 300WS
M for all practical hunting or benchrest shooting, which I doubt you will be doing.  Just because a rifle is a good deal, does not mean you should buy it.  Plus, there are plenty of good scopes, that equal the quality of the Zeiss, IMO, in that power range, that cost much less.  So, I say, walk, unless you like the caliber and the above caveats are meet.

I talked to him yesterday and he offered to sell me the scope alone for 550.  I can't pass that up.  The scope is in perfecty condition.  I'm going to buy it and mount it on my 7mm Rem Mag.
