Looking for a reputable company that does quality, dependable work. I want to have a barrel cut down a couple of inches and re-crowned. What company is considered the "barrel guru" for this type of work?

 Hey Brian,
This is the shop that did the work on my Mauser which included shortening and recrowning. Who ever does it make sure you request a recessed target crown.  How short ya goin with it?

Takin' it  down to 20'', maybe 18 1/2"  I'm turning it into my "semi-custom" short range, heavy dense cover,  full-time bear gun.

Ought to be a GOOD one!

With the bbl at 20" my rifle balances right behind the front action screw.  PERFECT,for me!

  How you gonna scope it?

Exactly.  As long as your gunsmith has a lathe suitable for barrel work, it's easy.  In fact, it doesn't really even require a gunsmith.  As long as you communicate what form you want the crown to take, any competent lathe operator can cut your barrel, face and recrown it.  The crown only has to be square with the centerline of the bore and burr-free.  Then, refinish as desired.

Yep.  Read an article by Finn Aagaard where he cut down and recrowned a bbl on one of his Mausers usig a hacksaw,a file (to true it),and a brass stovebolt w/a hand drill to recrown it.

I had a friend who had a 350 rem mag and had it cut down.  The muzzle blast was so terrible he developed a severe flinch and hated to shoot it.

Got rid of it.

Most of my rifles have a 26" barrel and I shoot in the field with no hearing protection and never notice being handicapped by the longer barrel.

The question is..........why?  No No

Midway USA has some good video's of re-crowning a barrel and maybe even of shortening one...Larry Potterfield makes it look easy.  Just in case you might want to try it yourself, doesn't look like it would cost that much to tool up....don't go to short, and if your not happy with it then you could always take it to a smith.  Good Luck, and post some before and afters for us.

I highly recommend most people NOT recrown their own barrels,  accuracy goes to hell fast if the crown is not done right.

Excellent

I understand about wanting a more handy woods gun.  If it is working now, don't monkey with it.  If somebody is really good, they will not want the job. If somebody is ok, they will not be able to get to it for 6 months...  If they are crap then you might as well do it your self...

Ahh yes, the popular question seems to be "why?" No logical reason other than I've decided to go ahead with this project, I like the looks of a short "carbine type" rifle, I have no short barreled rifle at this time, something different, don't want to buy a Marlin guide gun, 350 mag is a great platform for such a project, I'm bored, Don't want to buy a Remington 673, Can't afford an original Remington 600, certain amount of "cool factor" at camp, that pretty much covers that. Stock is currently off and being stripped, awaiting repair of several years of dings and scratches!

 Go for it,Brian.

I've never regretted for one minute shortening the bbl on my Mauser. 26" to 20"

I also had the bbl shortend on a .30-06 S&W(Husqvarna)due to a barrel bulge. Went from 22" to 17 3/4".  Even though this rifle would make for a PERFECT .257 Roberts,I've decided to leave it as is.

I do like my longer bbl rifles to though and would never think of shortening them.

As far as muzzle blast and noise go,I'm either numb or don't care.  Bucky

30-06 compared to a belted magnum in a .358 diameter isnt a good camparison. as far as cutting down goes, going from already short to even shorter is a big difference from 26 inches to 20 inches.other than personal preference i dont see any gains the warrant the change.

I like shorter as well.  It is amazing how much quicker you can swing them and get them on target.  Not to mention lighter, easier to carry, does not get snagged on stuff as easy.
