When shooting from a bench off sandbags either testing loads or establishing a zero.  How many grip the forend of the rifle and how many just let the forearm rest on the sandbag?  I havent seen any difference but I grip the forearm as I would in hunting situation.

I grip the forend sometimes, other times I may grip over the stock behind the receiver creating a slight pressure downward against the sandbag or rest.

I do the same as Wes. Hunting, it depends on situation how I hold my rifle which maybe different than how it’s held at the range. I’m mobile a lot of the time and not have the luxury of sitting in a stand. The rifle rest may be completely different, modified, improvised. etc.

Shooting from the bench... I generally use a sandbag for fore end support and a bag or monopod for rear support... and most often, also use a bipod or tripod ahead of the bag for zeroing... or use a lead sled.  I never press down on the rifle.

When shooting from the bench for load development, I do everything I can to get out of the gun, so I can see what it is capable of.  Field shooting is all over the place, depending on the weapon.
