You don't have to have a FFL but you have to ship thru or by someone who does (a gun  dealer). The CA gun laws are a nightmare for most but, that doesn't mean its impossible. Go to a local gun dealer and tell them your need. If it can be done they will know and may be willing to help you do it. Good luck, Let us know how things go.

True

It's not a nightmare but does require an extra step if shipping to CA.

Shipping to CA. It should be transparent to you and only a concern to the FFL (in your state) that your shipping through (#9, #5 and #1).

Shipping from CA to another state (#4)

Just reread this post and I'm a little confused as well. I see California and Michigan mentioned in this proposed transaction. What's PA... Pennsylvania?

I live in Michigan.  The problem with going thru agun dealer in CA is they want 100 bucks.  Its 40-45 here.  I just was asking if anyone knew if CA law was any different because you DO NOT need to ship thru a dealer with a FFL license in other states.  I just had a gun shipped from PA and the seller had no FFL license and sent it thru te mail.

as i understand it, you can ship a rifle to an ffl holder, but you cannot receive unless you have an ffl, i would suspect that cali is the same story. so in essence you are probably stuck.

All 49 other states?

I believe the DROS paperwork is still $25.00 the rest is dealer fees, etc. from the FFL your going through, try another dealer (FFL).

If I am reading this correctly, you have to receive the gun through an FFL holder in MI.
Go to http://www.gunbroker.com/ register and there is a search function for FFL's nation wide.
If this is a private transaction, you will still need to receive here through an FFL.
I have done this many times in MI.
Also, from Gunbrokers site
"By Federal Law, firearms can only be shipped to an FFL Holder. If you do not have an FFL, you must make arrangements with an FFL Holder in your state to handle the transfer. We maintain a list of FFL Holders who are willing to handle transfers for qualified buyers. Please contact an FFL Holder before placing a bid to make sure you qualify."
If you don't want to join Gunbroker, PM me your zip code. There are FFL's in MI as low as $20 for transaction.

Thanks for the info guys.  What I'm trying to avoid is my seller having to pay 100 to ship the rifle to me.  I don't want this to X the deal.   It is costing me 40 to use a FF dealer here in Mich. so I am trying to get his deal over with and be as fair as possible, without me kicking in another 25 or 50 bucks  to balance out the deal.

It depends if the weapon is a handgun ar a rifle. Some states like Washington must ship handgun thru a FFL to A FFL. Being that it is Cali you are dealing with it could be the same. Both are Liberal.

I am pretty sure in Cali all guns have to be shipped FROM a FFL to a FFL holder.  I read this somewhere recently too.  Pretty sure though, not 100%

Good advise, way to confusing. There's Federal law, State law, etc., best to call and CYA.
