Does anyone know approximately how much thickness in a shim under the scope base relates to how many mils/moa's you gain from using the shim..? Example: Shim Thickness of .020 = ?? mils/moa's Any help would be appreciated... Thanks, DD |

This depends on the action length and the base type.

I have used this formula:
Distance you want to move POI (bullet impact) / shooting distance x distance between outside of rings = shim thickness
(All measurements in same units)
I have used this formula to determine which pos-align inserts to use in my Burris Signature Zee rings. (I prefer those rings instead of shimming individual bases/rings)
Edit: outside of rings

2 piece base: For the movement at 100 yards divided by the distance between outside of the rings. (This has to be very precise) times the height of the shim. Say the distance between the outside of the rings is 5.025" 100 yards =3600 inches shim .020
3600/5.025=716.418*.020=14.328" On a 1 piece rail measure the distance from the opposite end of the rail where the shim is placed. Ring spacing will not be used. |
