Hello: I am new here and see you guys are knowledgeable about scopes and mounts. I recently acquired a Shepherd P2 3x10x40 scope. I have an older Remington 700 rifle in 30-06 and a Springfield M1A .308.
My original intentions was to put the Shepherd on the M1A but some one said put it on the Rem. 700 and try a Red Dot on the M1A. I am now rather confused but am leaning to put it on the Rem. 700 30-06 and have a quick dependable rifle. Assuming I do that my question is: What mounts and rings are appropriate for the Shepherd scope. The scope is 1 inch diameter. The rem 700 has the 2 weaver mounts and on the M1A I installed a NCStar M14  picatinney rail, real solid 3rd. generation steel. I hesitated on the NCstar mount but saw it was strong. I do not want to waste my money on junk from here out, better to put better quality on but not real pricey.
Soooo, any ideas or comments on any of this? Thanks.

IF you understand how to install the rings and scope, I suggest Millet Angle-Loc rings, low.  Steel, very sturdy.  Only problem I've ever seen with them is people who don't understand HOW trying to install.

John Galt would...

Who is John Galt?

O, wait, never mind.

First and foremost, M1As are a pain to scope.  If you want an optic, I'd do a red dot: fewer problems with cheek weld and eye relief.

I would mentally separate "steel', "strong", and "good."  Your NC Star mount might work for awhile, but I doubt it will last in the longrun.  If it proves to be usable, great; if not, plan on spending a decent $$ on a scope mount.  I know that ain't great news, but you are attempting to scope a rifle not designed for a scope.

As for mounts and the Shepherd, any good 1" rings should work.  No need to break the bank, but don't go super cheap.  Talley, TPS, MWG, that crowd should work fine.  Avoid the cheap stamped-aluminum rings (Weaver brand) and you should be good.
