My M1A is a standard model, with a nice Winchester trigger group and a great bore. It shoots 147gr. milsurp around 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards with irons and a sandbag without trying very hard. When I lived in California, I could shoot out to 1200 yards on our range. At 800 yards the rifle would bang the 18" steel gong with iron sights about 5 out of 6 times, and it didn't seem all that difficult.

As impressed (and happy) as I am with the iron sights of my M1A, I've been wanting to scope it for a while. I have a proper Smith Enterprises mount for it- all I need now is a scope and rings.

I've been considering the Burris Fullfield II scope, the Mueller APT 4.5-12x40, or the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40.

Most of the use the rifle sees is way less than 400 yards, but I'd like to be able to hit an 18" target out to around 800 yards without too much trouble. Since I can do that with the irons already, I'm just looking for a little magnification for target recognition. I think variable magnification is needed.

What do you guys think? I'm trying to keep it in the $250 or less range.

Probably going to be using Warne Maxima rings.

You probably wont like what Im going to tell you but I suggest you keep it with no scope on it and buy a bolt gun and put whatever scope you want on the bolt gun  R5 mil Spec or Tikka or Savage.
If you use a traditional scope on an M1a you have cheekweld issues for which there are three acceptable fixes  - 1 Sage Stock  2 Mc Millan Stock like M25  3. Karsten cheek piece.

The other really acceptable choice of scope is an Aimpoint because cheekweld is not an issue if you can see the dot its on the target not so with traditional optics and the action of the M1a is very hard on traditional optics. My TA442 1.5x Trijicon ACOG is another fine choice for an M1a but my 3x ACOG does not have enough eye relief to work on it.

I built my own cheek riser from fiberglass, and I like it very much. I've ran a few rounds through a cheap bushnell scope just to test out the cheek weld, and it's fine.

I've actually decided to go with a Nikon Buckmark 4.5-14x40 mil-dot...I think it'll work fine.
