I am getting a Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308

Thinking about getting a SWFA SS 10x42 scope for it and using the weaver picatinny 20moa base and tactical 6 hole medium rings.  I would like to have a 5-20x50 SWFA but the $$

How are yall liking this scope? what about the bases?  With this scope and the 20moa base will I be able to zero at 100yrds with it?  It is mostly going to be a target/ varmint gun.  I want to be able to take it to 1000yrds in the future after a new stock since I dont think the current stock is going to cut it.

Thanks!

Jake

Jake, welcome to the OT.

You will be able to zero at 100 with the SS 10x or 10xHD, NO PROBLEM.  The SS line has some of the widest adjustment range of any scopes on the market.  The 10xHD will give you a considerably better view, especially in low light, but the 10x is more than adequate for the type of shooting you describe.  I have used the 10x, own the 10xHD (which sits on my 50BMG).  It is an awsome scope, repeatable, accurate, reliable.
As long as the SPS stock is undamaged and properly bedded, there should be no issue with reaching 1000 yards.  Good ammo (I suggest a good 168gr bullet) and proper fire control system (human in the loop) will be more important than changing out the stock.

while the sps is oneof the better buys out there it has several serious short comings. I got one for a short to medium range all around rifle, with a lower profile than most tactical. the hogue stock (assuming you have that also) needs to be cleaned up inthe barrel channel so no contact is made, and also the cheek is too low for serious 1000 yd shooting. While the 10x power is good, for an all around use riflethe 3x9 SSwould be a better pick

I really want the variable power, but am trying to keep the cost down for now. I didn't think the houge could be bedded, what would stick to the rubber? That and the forearm now being ridgid enough for the bipod. Thanks guys!

I have the same rifle, had it cut to 16" recently but what I did was cut a channel into the forearm fo the stock, took a piece of steel bar about 1/4" round and beded it into the forearm with some of that 24hour epoxy.  It siffened up my forearm so that it doesn't contact the barrel on a bipod.  added a little weight but not much.  I would suggest going TPS base and TPS rings. IF you want to go budget get a EGW base and SS rings.  Would be better than the weaver for sure and not much more.

With a flat base, and a 100 yards zero, my 10x has enough internal elevation to get my Savage chambered in 300 wsm out to almost 1 mile(I also have to hold-over 3 mils). +1 on the TPS recommendation. Quality rings and bases are what tie the two systems together.
