I noticed that my 2 hunting scopes each 3-9x40 have parallax set at 100 but the image is clear from 20yds to infinity. The crosshair does move past or in from 100. But the image is clear across the ranges. Set at 9x.

Now the scope I recently purchased with adjustable parallax is clear when you get it set right. But I was wondering if the scope has adjustable parallax do you have to adjust it? I see guys say they set it at 100 or so and hunt. This would never work on this scope if its not tweaked each different range its pretty blurry. Is this normal?

I don't recall the S&B and Mk4 I was issued in the military being this blurry but its been awhile and I almost always adjusted the parallax on them. Did a lot of looking around during observations tho and never adjusted the parallax. Maybe somethings going on with my new scope?

Thanks

All my scopes with adj parallax are blurry if not adjusted. The recommendation to set them at 100 doesn't work for me either, so I've switched to fixed parallax for dedicated hunting and SD rifles that will be used for relatively short range. The parallax error is minimal until you get out to longer ranges even with less-than-perfect eye position.

This really depends on the design of the specific scope.

Which scope did you purchase that has adjustable parallax?

Ilya, can you tell me a little more about this? Are there some sizes or particular manufacturers/models that the adj parallax can be set at 100 (or whatever) and have reasonable focus at common hunting ranges?

It depends on the depth of field of the scope.  Generally, with a lot of scopes that have parallax adjustment, when the scope is at moderate magnification, you still have decent sight picture without adjusting anything.

It really varies with different designs, hence my question.

SS10x42 is the one I'm referring too. Scopes brilliant when adjusted properly.

I assume this is the rear parallax model, right?

You are correct, this scope needs to be adjusted for distances.  Part of it is a function of the scope design and part is a function of the magnification.

For hunting, you could set it to 100 or 150 and do fine as long as the view is good from say 25-300 yards. A little parallax error won't matter there. If shooting targets, longer distances or prone where you have some time, you might want to dial it in just right.
Reaction time is a factor...
