I am a new member here, and I am doing research into the JFK assassination, in particular the rifle and scope mounted on it. The scope, as many of you will likely know, was made in Japan for the Ordnance Optics Inc. of Hollywood California and was a rimfire scope designed to be mounted on a .22 calibre rifle.

The scope was mounted on Oswald's rifle by the mail order firm he purchased it from. It was mounted offset to the left side of the bolt action rifle's receiver, as it was necessary to load the magazine of this rifle with six cartridges held in an "en bloc" clip, and a scope mounted directly over the receiver would interfere with this.

As all of you are likely aware, a rifle scope inevitably has the windage adjustment cap on the right side of the scope, as seen from behind. However, if you look at photos of Oswald's 6.5mm Carcano, the windage adjustment cap is on the left side of the scope.

What I do not know, and what I am seeking your help with, is that one of two possibilities is correct:

1. The scope was manufactured with the windage cap on the left.
2. Even with the scope offset to the left, the windage cap still interfered with the bolt handle and the en bloc clip, and the scope was turned 90° in its rings. This would, of course, make the elevation cap the windage cap, and vice versa.

Hopefully, one of you actually owns one of these scopes, and can simply remove the caps to see which adjuster says "UP AND DOWN" and which says "LEFT AND RIGHT".

Thanks in advance.

It seems that possibility #2 is correct:

OT: I have turned scopes 90 degrees when spent cartridges have hit the windage turret and returned back where they came from....

Hi Gerry

Thank you for responding. While the author of the Education Forum you linked to sounds very convincing, I have to confess I am the author of that thread and, after going over some of the information, must say that I myself am not totally convinced of the validity of all of that information.

When I stated that the Ordnance Optics scope had been turned 90° in its mounts, to accommodate loading the clip into the Carcano rifle, I was passing along the opinion of a researcher who had looked into this matter many years ago. He may be right but, I believe it worthwhile to dig a little deeper to establish the real reason the scope is mounted so unusually.
