Looking for some help on my scope selection.  I thought I could pick it out on my own, but looking at all the choices, I am seeking outside opinions.  I have a Savage 10FCP-k in .308 and I'm looking to spend around 600 bucks.  It's flexible for good persuasion.

So far what I have gathered I would like is 30mm tube, 50mm objective, Variable up to 16x (I thought 24x would be good but I worry it could be a waste for that rifle.  Plus I don't see as well as I used to), 40+ MOA internal adjustment (might be asking much for that price range), and FFP.  Steer me clear if I'm heading the wrong direction with any of this.

Also any opinion on biasing the mount is appreciated.  I was thinking of 10MOA offset.

Thanks.  Just Target.  My knowledge in scopes is still growing but my knowledge in camera lenses is decent.  When looking at long distances, more glass is always better.  Figured when I'm pushing 16x or 24x on a cloudy day, I can still see with 50mm.

First rule, quality of glass will trump magnification any day.

Welcome

Figuring this will be a bench rifle as you posted in the target section.

How far you plan on shooting? Do you plan to shoot in matches where you are limited to a certain magnification at certain ranges?

The more you share about what you plan to do with your rig, the better the advice and opinions you get will be.

If it's to be a bench gun and usually shot at the same distance, you might look at a good fixed power scope and a good spotting scope. If it's 600 yards or less I'd go this route.

If you do shoot where you are limited to 6x at certain distances, or if you plan on trying to hunt with the same rig I'd get this.

If this is strictly going to be a target gun why not a fixed 16x  sightron SIII it has lots of internal adjustment great glass and reasonable price.

Thought my email was going to tell me when someone posts but I guess not.  It's pure pleasure shooting both at ranges and wilderness.  Fixed power is not a bad idea and honestly I have not looked into it that much but I might now.  600yds was the average I had in mind.  I like the idea of adjustable due to the fact some places we go to shoot (lots of other stuff), I would be limited to 200 yrds.  How is 16X at that distance?  Do I see the ants walkin on the target because I would rather not.

Welcome JeepWelcome

I have a similiar set-up. 308 with a 8-25 X 50. I only shoot paper. We engage targets for competition from 50 yds to 400yds. I have lately done fun shooting out to 600yds.

My scope stays on 25X during the entire execrcise, unless we shoot inside 70 yds, when we mostly have to shoot off-hand. Then I crank down to 8 x and wish I could go to 4X.
Let me also say we do not shoot at nice black or red bulls against a white target. We shoot at animal prints and we need to identify little white flecks, black shadow etc to aim at.
So magnification is our friend. Some of the top shooters are even going to the new scopes with 30 and 40X magn.
We also shoot at 8 inch white gongs, from 150 yds out to 400 yds. Again the scope stays on 25X.

Let me add I have seen some guys do very well in the competitions with max 14X magnification. But the top guys, who stay in the rankings all sport Zeis, Leupold  or Nightforce with minimum 22X even up to 30X plus.

I think FFP is going to be more expensive then 2ndFP, so maybe drop that choice.

At 200 yds with 16X you will not see ants walkong. On a normal day...slight mirage etc...you will just be able to see bullet holes.

My advise if you are going to shoot 100 yds and further is to go for 16X fixed as a minimum. Otherwise even 20X.

We did a shoot the fly comp a while ago. On 25x at 220 yds the fly, larger then a normal fly about the size of a big bee, is clearly visible. At 300 yds one can see a black something.

If you think 16 is too much you should look at the different models of Super Sniper they have a 10x HD version that is very nice and is what I use on my .308 also they have two older style but significantly less expensive 10x scopes and a 6x as well as a variable 3-9 that I really like and a older style 16x and 20X of these the only one I have not yet had is the 16 although I have scopes that go to and past 16x and I like that for a top power.  I find that I can work fairly well with anything from 6x on the low end or less than 6x but I dont much care for variables that start higher than 6x. With a fixed power I usually prefer a 10x but if I was doing target shooting only I would definately go to 16 or 20 and none of them are going to show the ants on the target but it is sure nice to see the bullet holes on the 200 yd target and the 16 and 20 should do that. I suspect the 16x Sightron will be the next scope I buy.  If you had said you want to hunt it also I would say go with the Super Sniper in the 6x42 I bought one of those a couple months ago and I just love it as it is a really bright scope in low light where the higher powers will not be as bright.
