I just mounted a newly acquired Zeiss Diavari 1.5-6x42  on my Rem 700 via a 1 piece Badger 20moa mount and low height Badger rings.  When I dial the magnification down below about 2.75 I can clearly see the end of my barrel.  I have not zeroed, but I did a rough boresight via viewing through the barrel.  When I have it dialed all the way down to 1.5, I see ALOT of barrel.

Its a 22" barrel and the scope is mounted back farther than normal since I have a 1" extended stock.

Is this normal for a low magnification scope?

Did I screw up getting a 20 MOA base for this particular scopes specs?

Or, is it due to the scope being set back a bit more than normal?

Any thoughts/advice?

Thanks.

Not an expert, but I would say you could have done without the 20 MOA mount on this setup.  How far are you planning to shoot whith this rifle/scope setup?
I also wouldn't worry about it too much until you zero your rifle, are you going to have a 100 yard zero?
You should be able to burn through the barrel image at around 3 power and greater.  More experienced people will chime in soon.

I have seen that happen with my low powered European scopes (1.1-4, 1.5-6).  I only see the barrel at the bottom of the field of view.  I use Warne medium rings.  When shooting, i just put the crosshairs where they need to be on the target.

My 0.02...

Yes it is normal.  Most of the time with a scope below 3x you can see the end of the barrel.  Once you get above 3x it focuses past the barrel so it is not seen.  It is not a problem with your mounting, its just the way it is.

Thanks for the replies and insight.

Yes, 20 MOA was probably overkill.  It was suggested in case I decide to go long range with this rifle, certainly wasn't neccessary for "most"of my shooting.

I never had a scope below 3x magnification, so when I noticed this on the lower end it kind of surprised me.

I'll zero and learn to accept the look.

Thanks all.

I see it in my scopes that go under 3x..... I always thought it was just due to the wider field of view.

Yes it is normal.  At low magnifications this is usually a function of wide field of view and increased depth of field.

At the risk of being redundant... yes, that's perfectly normal for all low powered scopes at magnifications below about 3X.

No, you didn't necessarily screw up by getting a 20MOA base, though it isn't needed until you get to dialing in dope at shot distances beyond what most would buy a 1.5-6X scope for.

Welcome to OT, sir!

Again, many thanks to those who replied.

Glad to know that the issue is nothing unusual.

Regarding the 20 MOA base, I guess for $7.00 extra it cost, I am at least set up if ever I change out to a higher magnification scope to really reach out, not neccessarily a bad thing I guess.

BTW, I really like the Zeiss Victory Diavari (1.5-6x42 reticle 4).  I went out last night a good 1+ hour past sunset with very little ambient light in the sky and could easily see the reticle and detail out to about 100 yards under the tree canopy around my house...could've easily made a kill shot on a pig!!!

Bought it off the sample list, a Demo B that came to me in NIB condition, just wow.  Thanks SWFA.

will the 20MOA base cause issues with sighting-in at 100 yds?

Not likely.  I have a 30 MOA base on one of my rifles and still can get a 100 yard zero.
