howdy all.
being new to the forum, evidently i cannot post pics. as such, please forgive my lack of descriptive abilities. The question is this- I have a one-off, O/U 30/06 in need of optics. The gun was a prototype built in the mid-'80s out of Browning and prototype pieces. It was pitched to Browning by a small(ish) design company, Bellmore Johnson, but Browning opted for 'No'. The barrels are 17.5" to the receiver. Add the receiver (Browning made, i think) and there is a total length on 21.5". Short. The receiver has not been been drilled/tapped for a scope and i do not intend to do so. However, at the 15" mark, the front sight can be removed. So my question is this: is a scout scope appropriate for a 30/06? I anticipate using this gun for western game- but i already have a reach-out-and-touch-someone 7mm for (anticipated) longer situations. I have not used a scout scope before and cannot seem to find anyone around here who has such a setup. And, if this does not seem silly, does anyone recommend any scout scopes other than the leopold or burris? Thanks in advance for any advice and/or input. |

I recommend you leave the rifle in original configuration. Double Rifles can be quite valuable and you would do well not to alter this firearm from its original configuration. Scout scopes are best used on rifles that have a special forward mounted rail system like the ones made by XS for lever guns or the scout model of M1a. A scout style rifle could of course be a 30-06 but the best ones I know of are .308
MANNLICHER SCOUT .308http://www.steyr-mannlicher.com/en/jagdwaffen/scout/ Due to its short overall length of just 98 cm (38,6") and the low weight with approximately 3 kg (6.6 pounds), the MANNLICHER SCOUT is the perfect rifle to be utilized universally.

thanks for the quick reply.
understood on not modifying the rifle. I was under the impression that it would be possible to modify a rail mount system so that a scope could be affixed without needing to drill any holes (or such). am i off base here?

as to my question, are there any makers of note aside from leopold and burris who make a scout scope? My google search shows no- but I am rank new in this area.
another question, off topic (if this does violates the spirit of the forum, please let me know. us new guys make mistakes): how do I go about ascertaining the value of a unique gun? There is no blue book on this model. I have been to shows, but the numbers vary wildly. again, thanks for any help.

You need to talk to a really good gunsmith and show it to him and get some advice on it. If you are interested in selling it then you could auction it to find the highest price. If it is merely an exercise in determining value then keep asking around. In any case I think it rather pointless to alter it. Actually I'm not really sure where you are headed with all this.
Burris SpeedBead might be the least invasive type of optic if one could be adapted to it.
You can install most red dots like aimpoint in a scout position. Steyer makes a scout scope but the field of view is really crappy. There are probably several others. Best of the group is the Leupold. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - July/05/2009 at 00:03 |

If you can make it work without altering the rifle, I've had the Leupold 2.5X scout scope and can vouch for its quality and usability. The exit pupil is so high (11.2 in this case) that the light transmission far exceeds what your eye can use. It's a simple, lightweight, short scope. The FOV is decreased considerably by the forward mounting, but it is one of the few scopes I've actually enjoyed shooting with both eyes open. (Compare the FOV of the 4X, which is 24' vs. 22').
