Ok, I thought I would not scope my Marlin Guide Gun but I have had a change of heart.  I am thinking of mounting a rail and putting a low powered pistol scope mounted out over the reciever or barrel.  Can a pistol scope handle some magnum loads of a 45/70?   I like the idea of the pistol scope with its exteneded very long eye relief. I love the hot loads out of the .45/70 but Im not so hot on the idea of a scope in my forehead  The stock sights just did not do it for me so the current set up is an XS ghost ring in the back and a Brockman winged front sight.

Most shots will be 100 yards or less, with the occasional shot out to about 150.  Hunting situations will be out west with brush and high timber and lots of rain. This is mainly my bear / wild pig gun.  So far a couple scopes that caught my attention are:

Burris Short Mag 1x, Burris Scout 2.75X or the Bushnell 3200 Elite 2-6X handgun scope Nikon Monarch 2x Hnadgun Scope.

Also, while I love red dot sights on my "tatical rifles" it just wont work for a lever gun.

I really like the Burris Safari line but a bit more money that I am willing to spend since I am not totally sold on scoping the gun atleast not till I try it out.  If I go with a pistol scope if I dont like it on the big pumkin launcher I could put in on several handguns I own.

Any thoughts, suggestions, opinions, or lottery numbers welcome

AC

EIther a Burris scout 2.75x20 or Leupold Scout 2.5x28 would work just fine.  Burris has a heavier reticle, so it would be my choice, but either one works (I have a Leupold, and I am considering a Burris).

Pistol scopes are probably tough enough, but they often have parallax set for shorter ranges and longer eye-relief than you need (and correspndingly narrower field of view).

Koshkin: What do you think has better glass between the Burris or the Leupold?  Would the 1X Burris work?  Im trying to stay as low as possible in magnification.  Would I really see any difference between the Burris at 2.75x as compared to the Leupy at 2.5X?

Cheap: Yes that is the exact rifle

Silver: Very cool looking sight by WWG, but I already have an XS rear sight and a Brockman front sight, thinking I might add a scope????

Thanks all for the suggestions, please keep them coming

AC

It is pretty difficult to tell better glass between two decent low magnificaiton scopes that are pretty far from your eye and are of different magnifications to boot (Leupold's actual magnification is 2.3x).  Both are good.  Leupold, in theory, is supposed to have more forgiving eye position, while Burris is supposed to be a little brighter and sharper.  In practice the differences in optical quality are very minor and you will not see them in any normal conditions.

The biggest differences are as follows:

Burris has higher magnfication by about 20% bringing the target a little closer.

Leupold has a larger field of view: 22 feet at 100 yards vs 15 feet for Burris.

Burris has a thicker reticle than Leupold

Leupold is a little more forgiving with respect to eye position.

Burris is a little cheaper.

It really all depends on what is more important to you.  I tend to keep both eyes open when using a scout scope, so field of view is not very important to me.  Thicker reticle, however is pretty important to me, so I would side with Burris if purchasing a new one (I already have a Leupold).

However, both are good scopes that are designed just for this application.

Have you seen teh XS SIghts Lever rail?  I though it was a pretty good idea.

(competitor) USA has the XS Sight Lever Rail for that gun on sale this week!

http://www.(competitor)usa.com/eclearance.exe/browse?promoti onid=9 076&brandid=2008

Buy that and a Leupold or Burris scope from SWFA and you will be set!

It looks like SWFA censors the board for links to compeditor websites.  SWFA does have a 110% price matching policy, so I guess you could get the rail from them for the same sale price or cheaper.
