I've ordered a new S&W M&P10 (G&A review) and while I won't take delivery for several more months (long story) I'm starting to look at ideas for optics. It's for general farting around and maybe a bit of hunting so I don't want to go nuts with magnification or add a ton of weight to a 7.7lb rifle so for now I'm thinking I want to use a 2-10x40ish scope. I'm planning to sell off my 300WM and could always repurpose the seriously good 4y/o 17oz Burris Signature Select 3-10x40 that won't be going with the .300, or I could go with a reasonably light (16oz) Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44, or possibly a fairly heavy (19oz) Weaver Super Slam 2-10x42. I'd like to keep it a variable under $450 which is why the Viper PST isn't on my list. I'm interested in experiences with these scopes and I'm open to better suggestions. I have an extra LaRue scope mount (and Geissele trigger Big Grin) laying around so that's not an issue.

Not to derail your thread, but I'm SLOWLY warming up to the idea of a...(gulp)...AR in .308. Nothing at all meant to disparage your rifle, I just don't like AR's in general.

If they have resolved some of the reliability issues with the larger caliber AR's, I'd be even more inclined to check them out.
