After taking a 15 year hiatus from hunting, I finally started again.  I could kick myself for all those wasted years, but that's another story.  This story is about the optics I currently have and how I should update.  My current scope is a 21 year old Redfield Golden 5-star 3-9x??, and definitely needs replacing.  My binoculars are Nikon Action 10-22x50mm.  I am having an argument with myself about how I should proceed.  My first thought was to purchase a Kahles CL 3-9x42mm and keep my binoculars.  Then those voices said I should instead buy a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm and put the extra money towards a good pair of binos, maybe Pentax DCF or Leupold Pinnacle or even Zeiss Victory?  I haven't really looked into binoculars yet, but those voices just won't shut up.

Oh yea, I hunt out west, so a lot of the time is spent glassing hillsides.  I also need to purchase a spotting scope and a rangefinder, but I think they can wait another year.

Any thoughts as to which voices I should listen to?  Or should I compromise and get the Kahles scope with Zeiss Victory binoculars? (I wish).  Where should the money be spent?

60% scope, 40% binoc. Forget the rangefinder and spotter unless you have an ATV, jeep winch, hot camp shower, etc. and have run out of toys to play with on a hunt. The Zeiss scope would be a "better" choice, and any binoc that is easily carried, light and not to powerful. I use 2 sets. A 6X20 compact Zeiss that I always have in my pocket, (works great for birds, chukkars, incoming flights of ducks etc) and a larger set for "scanning" big game. If fact make that 30% scope, 30% large binoc. 40% compacts.

I hunt out west too.  After 40 years with the same hardware I decided to upgrade the optics.  New scope and binocs.  Deer season starts next Friday, but during my scouting with the new binocs I have seen more deer with bigger racks.  Not sure I can credit the binocs for the bigger racks, but the new glass makes a difference!

Thanks guys.  I'm guessing the Zeiss Conquest and new binos would be the better move, but I just can't get over how much better the Kahles CL is.  Has anyone had any experience with the Kahles customer service?  I know Zeiss is great, but I haven't heard anything about Kahles.
