I have an older Savage 93 in .22WMR, shoots decent groups, has an older Simmons Whitetail Classic. But I want a 4-12x with an adjustable objective, bus as with everything in my life CASH is the issue.
The $99 Vortex seems to be the one to beat, but I am a weirdo who does not like crosshair reticles. Any ideas on a scope with plex type reticles, and maybe more in the 12x max range? |

I'm looking at one of these for my old marlin .22 mag.
http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-12x40-Diamondback-Rifle-Scope-P10825.aspx Gotta wait a bit on mine, we found a puppy to put a deposit on. "yippie something else at my house that eats, poops, and doesn't have a job" Why didn't they socialize pet care? |

The Diamondback has one flaw, no AO.
Since I read John Barsness book Optics for the Hunter, I am big on AO's for my 22 mag. He wrote how an adjustable objective really helps milk the accuracy out of a rimfire, and I followed the advice, and boy did it work for me in Germany! But I do not have much disposable cash these days. I might settle for a Bushnell Banner, but I would rather have a Trophy in 12x but it is a bit too pricey for me right now. |

I hear ya on the great cash shortage of 2010. Things are so tight here when I fart only dogs hear it.
The Trophy line is pretty good, but the highest magnification I've personally looked through is 3-9 with one. I dunno if the clarity is there at 12x but perhaps others here would know. What did Mr. Barsness have to say about AO, and which book was it? Sounds like something I could learn a bit from. Sorry the AO didn't compute when I responded. Been a long day. |

His book, which I am waiting for an updated version (Hint-hint John!), is titled "Optics for the Hunter" I read it in Germany, it was a huge help to me.
In one chapter he mentions how the scopes sold for rimfires are paralax adjusted to 50 yards. He recommended putting a scope designed for a centerfire, with an adjustable objective. As it turned out I had a German scope from Seeadler in 4-12x 56mmAO. So just to putz around I put it on my Hammerli bolt action .22LR and after tinkering around at 25, then 50 meters. ONE RAGGED HOLE! Using the the adjustments really did the trick! Moved it back to 100m, 3/4" five shot groups. In Germany, the scope was about $450, and I do not have anywhere near that now. Well I didn't then either, but I managed. |
