I will be scoping a .223 Savage for relatively informal target practice at a 100 meter range. Although I will be using some sort of a rest most of the time, I would like to do free hand shots also. I would like the optic power to make longer shots if the opportunity arises (200+ yards).
(Yes I have considered the SS, but I would like a variable at under $300)
At this point my short list includes the Millett TRS-1, the Mueller Tac II, and the Buckmaster 4.5-14x40.
My main concern with the Millett is the size and weight - at nearly 2 pounds it looks to be a big heavy beast. The mounted photos I've seen dwarf the rifle. I am concerned about the increased weight and loss of balance.
Anyone have any thoughts? Or should I just extend my gym workout time and stop whining?
Thanks.

Welcome, Molasses!

When considering scope weight, for me at least, the issue with a super heavy scope is not so much that the rifle will be physically too heavy to carry, but that the extra weight will spoil the balance of the rifle, making it excessively top heavy and cause it to want to cant in the hands or tip to the side when shooting from a bench.  A scope that's too large looks visually out of proportion to the rifle, not to mention makes it more prone to hang up on stuff during use.  A 2 lb scope seems extremely heavy for the average .223, but if it's a heavy barreled varmint rifle with a thick, wide forend stock, it might be just fine.

I have not tried the Mueller but I have a 4 to 14 buckmaster and 2 Millett TRS-1 scopes and I prefer the Millett TRS-1 , it is heaver than the buckmaster but if weight were that much of a problem I could go on a diet and make up a lot more difference.

The Buckmaster is only (!) 17 oz. THAT's not too bad for a varmint-type carrying gun. Got plenty of magnification....I would do that.  It looks neat, too, although a bit long. Looks very slender! HA! Wink            --Ed

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. After much agonizing, I tracked down a TRS-1.
It went on a Savage with a 26 inch heavy barrel. Although the final package is a little heavy (hardly light to begin with) it certainly isn't ridiculous, and will be easily hand holdable.
The scope is not top heavy, and actually improved the overall balance of the rifle.  I'm currently using medium rings, but the zoom ring is a little close to the bolt knob during cycling. Although its very usable I might try something higher one of these days.
Thanks again.
