Could any of the experts here tell me what it would take to degrade the optical integrity of a scope via scope tube dents and dings?  I'm not talking the real big ugly stuff that would most surely cause a problem, but the other stuff.  These scars could be caused by handling, falls, scope rings, or whatever else.  How thick are the walls of a aluminum alloy scope tube(avg. of different makes)?  Thanks.

There is no simple answer to your question since every manufacturer uses something slightly different.  On top of that, the exact aluminum alloy used is also likely different.  There there are the variations in internal construction that make some scopes more susceptible than others.

I fudged up a VX3 via mounting with a set  leupold double dovetail rings. Darn things were no where near in the ballpark to make a good mount but didn't see the mistake.  Didn't take care of the problem until after mounting a Zeiss in the same rings and then realizing the suckers were not made like they should be.  Left a decent sized scar on tube but I'm hoping this won't degrade the optics.

With a Zeiss i doubt you will see a problem with just a gouge.  Can you post a picture of it so we can see how deep it is?  May be hard to get it.  I think your ok.  Already zeroed it?

Ok Koshkin, thanks for the reply.  You too, SVT.  The Zeiss is now mounted and it works perfectly so far.  It was more of a hypothetical question, as I don't think the scope I dinged up will have any problems, it's more a cosmetic blemish I would say.
