Why do we never see any real, quantitative tests of rifle scopes?  I get lots of different magazines, and have never seen a real, scientific comparison.  Camera lenses get tested in great depth, and the results reported, for resolution, contrast, aberration, etc.  Why can't we get this for scopes?   I suspect a conspiracy

there has been plenty lately in europe. one was posted here recently. because i dont know how to cut and paste on this forum i cant bring htem here. go to accuratereloading.com in the optics section and you will see a recent scope test actually 2.
24hourcampfire.com has both of these in their optics forum as well. one was done using 3 peoples eyes and theor opinion, the other was done by a universoity using spectrophotometer and all the electronic stuff. that one got posted here recently.

as full of BS, as most of these reporters are these days, and favor certain brands, and wont admit that there are actually better scopes, i think it would be pretty hard to get a good review. a prime example would be the outdoor magazine from awhile ago, they tested quite a few scopes, and they gave the POS BSA sweet 17 a better review than a S&B, and they also rated the VXIII, and every other scope higher than it, when it was clearly the superior scope.

The hunting media is not going to list something real bad about a brand of scopes do to loss of advertising from that company. When is the last time you picked up a hunting Mag and saw a editor really trashing a hunting product that buys space in the Mag. That would be bad business even I can see that. Same thing is said for a company who does not or will never by space in there mag. Would you rate your paying friend alittle better even if all things were equall? It may not be right buts thats how life works sometimes. Also don't forgot many people writeing these articles get alot of free stuff sent to them.

Within each range of prices, each manufacturer must be competitive. Comparing a high price scope with a low price scope would be telling you something you already know. Even if one had the name of the best scope of the planet would you put out $10,000 for it. So--where does that leave the consumer. As for me, pretty happy-- I am amazed at the quality and utility of the average 3X9 and as for the price- sometimes dirt cheap if bought used.

Dale has a very good point with regards to used scopes. You can get some great deals on scopes that might just have minor blemishes( not the optics of course). Shooting Times has a new column " Eye on Optics" but so far they read just as ranburr has stated in the past with every article ending the same way, something like " you should take a look at XY or Z before you next purchase. So far, I think John Barsness is about the most accurate source of info. His book " Optics for the Hunter" was very candid, but dated as well. I would look foward to a Vol.#2 of this book if he puts one out.

Gun Test Magazine.

It is awesome... No advertisements, as little as possible subjective tests, easy to read.  I would take it over ALL of the other magazines put together.  The most unbiased opinions you will get!

New to the forum, this topic really interests me so I'm signing up for info.

I read and search a lot before opening my mouth so you can all expect me to lurk for a long time doing research. See you all around.

Scope tests-------Deciding on which brand of scope to buy is a deep, deep question. It begins by deciding whether Hell is exothermic or endothermic. Some support the endothermic theory and say they wouldn't buy Nikon until Hell froze over. Others say "It will be a cold day in hell before I bought BSA. If endothermic, then this means Hell is contracting. A serious problem for the over-the-seas market. Still others say I'd burn in hell before buying another Leo. or that Zeiss is really hot. Clearly definitive proof for the exothermic theory. An expanding hell means more choices for everybody, a hell in itself. As for me, all this means is a proof for a greater being, "Oh my God look at that group size!!!!

Happy Holidays

I think ranburr said it best when he said,

"Dale Clifford, you are my favorite "Evil Genius".

The Scope and Rifle is only good as the user

This is my rifle.

There are many like it, but this one is MINE.

My rifle is my best friend. It is my life.

I must master it as I must master my life.

My rifle without me is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless.

I must fire my rifle true.

I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me.

I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...

My rifle and myself know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire,

the noise of our bursts, nor the smoke we make.

We know it is the hits that count. We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life.

Thus, I will learn it as a brother.

I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories,
 its sights, and its barrel.

I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage.

I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready.

We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God I swear this creed.

My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country.

We are the masters of our enemy.

We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until there is no enemy, but PEACE.
