Howdy, guys.  Trying to tap into the hive-mind here for some suggestions on a scope.  Here's the skinny:

I have a LaRue OBR rifle, 18" barrel, .308 caliber.  Obviously, it is a little heavy when loaded.  Here are my criteria for a scope:

1  -  Shots on man-sized targets out to 1000 yards, though the VAST majority of shots will be at under 500 yards, with 250-300 being 95%.

2 -  Would like a very optically superior, clear scope.

3 -  Prefer mil/mil, with FFP reticle

4 - Would really like illuminated reticle, and a NV setting would be ideal, though not absolutely a deal-breaker.  I could always add a small red dot/Micro Aimpoint if I had to go that route.

5 - Weight is a factor, so the lighter the better, though I understand that many of the above requirements may preclude that.

I was all set to seriously consider the Viper PST 4-16, but it appears that there are some issues with it, and I'm wondering if I can find a better scope optically with some of the same features that the PST has.

Budget is around $1000 or less.

I don't know if I like the idea of a scope combined with an off-set red dot due to weight and my desire to K.I.S.S., but if I have to I will.

Might want to check out a Vortex Razor, or wait a bit until Vortex irons out all the pre- production kinks on their new Viper PST line, which you mentioned.
Under $1000, there are a few other scopes that merit consideration.
Might have a look at a Sightron SIII, and some swear by the various Leupold Tac scopes.
There are others...

If I were you I would seriously consider the 3-9x42 S.S. despite its lack of illumination.  If you are mostly shooting within 500yards and only occasionally reach further out, this magnification range is a very good way to go.

IOR's 2.5-10x42 is right at your price limit for the non-illuminated version and is a touch above it with the illuminated reticle.

Aside from these two, FFP version of the Vortex Viper PST is your best bet, so that would be 4-16x50, which is reasonably compact for the configuration.  I am not sure I would be particularly concerned about the early teething problems with that scope.  All of the reported problems are being chased down quite aggressively and, IMO, they are not particularly major anyway.  For what you get, that is a pretty nice scope, and considering the price, it is quite outstanding.

Would you say the glass on the PST is on par with the SS 3-9x?  I have a SS 3-9x and it is quite nice.  It may end up being what I use, perhaps with an offset Aimpoint Micro T-1 for the really close shots and for use with NV goggles.

+1 for the 3-9 S.S. Unless you really want to spend money for the new 1.1-8x24 from Premier!
