Well, I've found that I can no longer effectively see the fire sights on my Marlin guide gun, an 1895 in 45-70, which I used for those nasty, snow falling off the trees days,  so I didn't have to worry about scope issues.  So I'm trying to decide on which scope to mount on it.  I'm leaning toward a 1.5-5 power scope as maximum and I've zeroed in on a couple possibilities:

Weaver 1-3
Weaver 1.5-5, but much more expensive

Anyone out there who's done it and had success, I'm looking for any other suggestions you guys might have.
Thanks

Just purchased a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x20 for a Marlin 1895M in .450.  Liked the Weaver 1-3 but was a little concerned about the shorter eye relief.   The Classic Extreme 1.4-4.5 was better but weighed in at almost 16 oz.

The VXIII gives me 3.7-5" of eye relief and weighs 9.5 oz.  Will be used mostly on 1.5X so feel a little more comfortable with the extra relief.  Doesn't look too out of place on the rifle.  Have just mounted it so no bench time yet.  Time will tell if I made the right move!

This choice depends on what you wish to spend.

Looks wise, the 1.5-5x20 Leupold VX3 on that Marlin is going to be your best bet followed by the lower powered variable Big Sky by Sightron. Optically, either one is an excellent and fine choice. I also suggest going with a thicker and faster acquiring duplex reticle which Leupold offers.

I`m not too keen with having belled objectives on the handy, big bored and shorter range levers. The straight tubed scopes imo, look better and are sleeker with their lower profile.

The 1-3x20 V3 by Weaver is a good little scope for the money, but optically the two above are better with a little more eye relief.

I own the 1.5-5x20 Leupold VX3 #4 which is rotated between two rifles, a 375 Ruger and a 300 WSM compact. It is one extremely fast (both eyes open on the lower power) scope for moving targets or otherwise. For your Marlin and my 375, it has wide FOV`s, light scope weight, perfect for the short range timbers, brush, dangerous game and on my 300 WSM, it is very capable of longer shots to 400-500 yards on deer sized game and larger if necessary.

I have the Sigtron SII Big Sky 1.5-5x20 on my Marlin 308MX and I am extremly pleased with this scope.  I took four deer with it this past fall.  Outstanding FOV on the lower end for jump shooting.  I took a doe at about 230 yards with no problem.  I also have the Weaver 1.5-5x20 on another Marlin and it is also a great choice, but in my opinion, the reticle is not as clear as the Sightron.

I'll cast another vote for the 1.5-5 Leo. The eye relief is very forgiving of eye position and is easy to use in the field.

Thanks gentlemen!  I didn't really have a limit on spending except for common sense;  I agree with the thinking....small diameter tube looks better on the handy dandy lever gun;  I too will more than likely use the scope mostly on 1.5 power;  I think I've settled on the Sightron as it has a straight front tube, more forgiving eye relief than the weaver and I've heard good things about it from others.  Thanks again for all your  thoughtful replies.

what about this scope........ it comes with the rainguard which would help with your "snow falling off the trees days" concerns.
