Looking for any input on a scope for my M1A...

I was going to buy a Trijicon TA11E with BAC but my primary ammunition is going to be Mil Surp. and the ACOG is set up for a different type of bullet weight and barrel length which i figue will throw off the range bar / accuracy. And I dont think it has adj. knobs.

My second choice is the Leupold 3.5-10x40 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm Riflescope pt.# LEU53668

Which i figure i can use with any round type and get it dialed in

Anyone else have some suggestions on scope brands? what to stay away from etc? Thanks...

This topic has been discussed in detail multiple times. I suggest you go to "SEARCH" and search "M1a"

The main drawback is the lack of a proper ckeekpiece. One fix McMillan stock  M-25 type

The type of scope mount makes a huge difference in how high the scope is -  ARMS base or SAGE Stock w/rail

As for which scope you need to say how it will be used operationally - what distances are involved for us to make a valid suggestion but you are on the right track.

I posted a thread of photos of M-14 with optics that are being used currently you should be able to find it with the search feature and that will tell you as much as anything about what you want.

The proper fix for mounting a scope on an M1A is an AR10.  You really are going to have difficulty with the issue stock being waaaay too low for scope usage.

Having said all that.................................  the  rack grade M1a is a 2moa gun at best. It might be a 1.5 moa gun when you get it but that will change as it rattles itself loose.  With milsurp it's a 4moa gun at best which defines the accurate usable range as 300 meters.

Get a low power scope with finger adjustments as one option. The next option is get a fixed power mil dot scope and learn to interpolate the mil spacing into come ups.  Sounds difficult but from a 100 yard zero with 147 milspec ball crap ammo, the 200 yard aim point is just over the top of the 1st dot.  300 yard aim point is bottom ofthe 1st dot.  400 yards is the 2nd dot and 500 yards is the bottom of the 3rd dot.  Forget 500+ with juink amo in that rifle.

As a side note just because I'm old and my mind wanders alot........................ there's an online arms and ammo distirbotr offering up "real deal honest to Gwawd sniper ammo  " for just under 30 bucks a box.  Stick with the crap ammo at 4bucks a box, it's better by a long way.

You can take what mike just told'ya like Moses got it on the tablet.  If it's not a Match grade gun why worry with a scope at all. Spend the money on a good gunsmith and N.M. sights. Than buy some match ammo. if its just a blinker, shot it as is, and have fun!  Oh, BTW, I'm old school, I love the M1A Ultra Match (Scopeless) N.M. sites. My front post may be fuzz, but thats 'cuse eyes may be going, OK they WENT. But the rifle still shoots better than most men are capable of with match ammo.

unfortunately i dont think im gonna be able to use the iron sights... i got into a car accident few years ago and my right eye has terrible problem with blurry vision when left is closed and double vision on fine/small objects like NM sights. The rifle is a loaded version with NM barrel and NM rear sights etc. I cant read what im typing right now at my laptop when i close my left eye.

Im not looking for a nail driver with my M1A just something i can hit center mass with easily.

any other suggestions ?

wow, given that predicament, UIF has the only solution, an adjustable cheekpiece stock to offset the high mounting platform the M1A is going to require.

Seriously, if you sold the M1A and went with a DPMS or AR10 your mounting options would be better, and your scope height problems would be greatly dininished.

Having said all that, I have a real fondness for that old rattle gun too.

I have an M1A, ARMS mount, low nightforce rings, and the leupy 3-9x36 MRT mark 4.its low enough that a 1 inch removeable cheeckpeice works fine.  It started life as the loaded version, then went to the SAI custom shop for bedding and gas cylinder work. Its a 1 moa rifle now.
