I am replacing a Leupold 2x7 VXII scope on a Remington 700 with a Nikon Monarch 2.5x10x42.  The existing rings size are medimums from the Leupold scope.  With the new setup the guns rear sight now sets about 1/4-1/2" above the bottom of the scope objective.  When looking through the scope at 2.5 power I can see a blur at the bottom of the scope.  When increasing the maginification above 2.5, the blur goes away.

Should I be concerned about leaving this set-up as is, or should I replace with high rings?

Its kinda like a mosquito annoying but it ain't gonna kill you.  I like to keep the scope as low to the barrel as possible so I would let it slide unless most of you shots are taken at low power.

It won't hurt the scope in any way.  It is just if you are okay with it or not.  You could also just take the back site off.

I would consider it a Nikon Monarch 3x10x40  or take the sight off like mentioned above.

Nightranger, might it be the end of your barrel your seeing at 2.5 magnification?  Since it goes away when you increase the magnification.  Put a piece of masking tape on the top end of your barrel and see if the dark area looks light color.  Seems to me there was a question like this asked just a few days ago, I could be wrong though.

Nightranger I misread your post and thought you were asking what the blur at low power was and I said it maybe your barrel.  In rereading it I see you stated that your rear iron sight sat above the bottom of your objective and you already knew what you were seeing as a dark area in your scope.

Is this normal to see the end of the barrel at low magnification?  Is this just an issue of the scope mounted too low or too high?

It depends on a few variables. With one of my rifles, it was having a scope that goes down to 2x that caused this to happen. As I go up slightly in magnification from 2x, the blurred barrel disappears. I know what your saying, it drove me nuts at first but it's no big deal, you get used to it fast.

Have the same situation on 2 rifles equipped with Nikon Monarch 2x7x32 scopes (a Ruger M77 Intl. and a Browning Pre 81 BLR) the blurr goes away as you zoom up.  I have to agree with mike650.  I hardly even notice it anymore unless I'm looking for it.
