I'm looking for a scope with longer than usual eye relief to mount on an S&K Insta Mount, which replaces the rear leaf sight on the M96 Swedish Mauser without drilling, tapping or other alteration...it sits on the barrel just in front of the action so should have a fairly short tube so as not to interfere with the boltor with loading or ejecting cartridges.   I want something pretty rugged and reliable, and moderately priced, that will let me take maximum advantage of the decent range and innate accuracy of this rifle out to five or six hundred yards.   What would you recommend?

The problem with that setup is that the base that you will get only has one definite point of contact that holds it on the screw that replaces the pin for the sight, and the base will tilt back and fourth. It comes with screws that go in on each side, and you tighten one, then when the other is tightened downward pressure is put on the screw oposite that one. on the plus side this allows you to adjust the angle the base is at so you can put a forward cant on the base for that long range accuracy, so you won't need to find a scope with a truck load of internal adjustment. however I purchased one of these mounts for a mosin nagant a long time ago, and the tips of the screws that apply pressure to the sight base, were constantly getting more and more flattened from recoil, causing the whole base to come loose and tilt up and down, requiring that I tighten them once again which was completely pointless as I got the same outcome on five seperate shooting sessions after each I had to tighten the screws again.

with any military surplus rifle, you will have to go the extra mile to turn it into a long range target rifle. You will save yourself lots of cussing and throwing of chairs if you leave it as is or have it drilled and tapped, and the bolt bent.

if you want to give it a go anyway, you are looking for any handgun scope.<link

What would I recommend? A differant gun or a more honest set of goals.  Some of the hand gun target scopes might get you closer to what you want.  A Scout will get you in the direction you want.  But you can have a dedicated scope set up to do five to six hundred yards, that is mounted properly by drilling and tapping (and bolt bending).  Now, the labour on that plus the cost of the rifle, will get you an OK new rifle.

I've got a Swedish Mauser M96 Long Tom (29" barrel) with a B Square mount and an older Burris 1 1/2x scout scope on it. The mount is similar to the one you described but the rear sight is maintained. The mount is placed on the rear sight(folded down) and  a screw tightens things down. Pretty simple. I can use stripper clips if I want. The B Square mount has stayed put with a generous helping of Loc Tite. It's a pretty accurate rig, but I never had any aspirations or delusions of thinking this is a 5-600 yard rig. It's good for punching holes in paper and maybe an occasional coyote. Basically this is one of the guns I shoot at the range while I let my other rifles cool off. I see Burris still offers a Scout scope in the $200 range, but it's 2.75x. If you really want a 5-600 yard rig, save some bucks and buy yourself a rig that can do the job or learn some gunsmithing. You'll need to remove the rear sight, shorten and recrown the barrel, replace the trigger (Timney makes a nice replacement) and replace the stock. Too bad Kimber still doesn't offer a sporterized Swedish mauser, I bought one of those about 10yrs ago for a song.
