Hi everyone. Just discovered this place yesterday. read a lot up to very late last night. Love this place big time. all the posts with swfa scope spec next to it makes it easy to understand... anyways , thanks for the good work here.
I just bought this 300wsm SavageFSS. it now has a B&L 4200 6-24 x40, 1/4 MOA reticule on.
I plant to do a moose hunt this Fall and I guesstimate the shots would be within 30 to 300 yards at most. I don't think the scope I have on now fits my needs very well.
I would prefer:
-- a scope with a good exit pupil for fast target acquisition ( quote from www: The larger the exit pupil, the less critical the position of your head in relation to the scope is)
-- and a scope with a long eye relief ( as I got a nice souvenir from a scope bite a few years back..., I'm now stock with a bit of fear every time I press the trigger... ho well )
-- $wise not more that $350 please, but cheaper is ok
-- fixed or variable I'm opened. I would naturally go for variable as they seem go give more options
I heard about the Zeiss Conquess with a 4 " eye relief. good choice? solid enough for a .300wsm ?
about the SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical Riflescope . is this too much power for my needs?
what would YOU get ? what model and power please?
Thanks for your help
Stef

For shots between 30 and 300, I'd say your 6-24 is not ideal.
Personally, on that budget, I'd consider a 4200 3-9 or maybe a fixed 4X (I have an IOR 4X hunter and think it would be great for that setup.) A 10X is too much for a 30-yard fast shot, 6X really is too. |

For $350 and less;
Variables;
2-7x33 Leupold VX2,,,,,great eye relief, very good optics and is lighter weight.
2.5-8x32 Nikon Monarch,,,,,also with good eye relief and very good optics.
3-9x40 Elite 4200,,,,,less eye relief than the two above, but with very good optics.
Fixed:
Imo, the best all around fixed power choice is the 4x.
4x33 Leupold FX2,,,,,great eye relief, lighter weight and more compact.
4x Zeiss Conquest,,,,,very good eye relief as well, better optics, but is a heavier scope
than Leupold`s 4x.
The Zeiss will more than handle the recoil of a 300 WSM. A 6x24 and/or the fixed 10x is way too much magnification for your use, especially for big game hunting at the closer ranges.

I'll agree with Squeezer and think that a good quality fixed 4x would be great for this situation.

Ck out Hawke Eclipse line, good optics, good price and really tough.
As mentioned above you just can't go wrong with a Bushnell 4200 either.
Personally I don't trust Nikon on anything with more recoil than a .30-06.

ive been using nikon scopes for the last 10yrs now, and ive had them on everything from 22-250 to a 6lb 300wsm and i can honestly say ive had zero failures or issues knock on wood. i will say that when it came time to scope my .375H&H i though about a nikon at first, then i took the 4200 elite off of my .264 win mag and put a team primos on my .264. i do wish that the 4200 (3x9 anyway) had more than 3.3" of eye relief. the 4x zeiss is a nice scope.

For your needs I'd go with either of these. Both have excellent optics and plenty of eye relief.
