Where in Iowa?   Scopes come in different powers and a scope is either a fixed power or able to zoom through a power range increasing in magnification.  The last number is the size of the objective which is the part at the front pointed toward what you are looking at.   The typical hunting scope most often used is a  3-9x42.   Have you used a camera which will zoom to make the object appear closer - its the same idea.

We do have a rifle season in Iowa the last two weeks of late antlerless season in the southern two tiers of Iowa.
Muzzleloaders are often used with a scope and they are much more accurate at distance than a shotgun, I typically set up my shots at 200yds with a musket, but I really perfer bow season because its warmer now.   I'm in Des Moines.
