I just bought the Marlin XL7 rifle and I have tried to mount 2 different scopes(Nikon & Swift).
They both were either hitting the bolt or too close to the bolt.I have also used 2 ring heights (med & high)with the same results. This is the first time I have ever had this problem. How do I find out which scope have a smaller power ring? Is this the right direction to solve this issue? |

In this case I will say get a Leupold. Typically they have much smaller eyepieces than many of their competitors.

Then go to the Leupold site and compare their ocular diameter specs with the Nikon and the Swift.
Marlin as far as I know to this point, chambers the XL7 in only the 25-06, 270 and the `06. The 2.5-8x36 VX3 might just make an excellent choice for size and dimension along with good magnification for those cartridges.

would another option be having the bolt reshaped so it doesn't travel up so high and what would that cost? Not that a VXIII wouldn't be a good option, but I assume he already has the other scopes.

To get a rifle and then have to modify its bolt to have adequate scope clearance?? Nope! I`d call Marlin first before doing any bolt modifications or unless they give the approval to do so.
