Just mounted a 4X12 AO Leupold VX11 scope on my bolt action rifle. The rings are Leupold as well and I'm using the lowest set they offer. I will not be testing the rifle until the summer. I took the rifle out to my backyard and used the old way to site in through the barrel. At 50 yards, the windage is perfect but the cross is still too high. I have adjusted the click down as far as it can go. It moved down but still a little too high. I have watched other people do it on Youtube at 30 yards and their scope dials right in with the barrel. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to custom my rings to shift it down a little?

Thanks!

  First off,WELCOME to OT!!

How high is the objective end of the scope off of the bbl?  Are you sure you've got the lowest rings?  Maybe you were sold the wrong set.

Have you fired the rifle to see where it hits, or does it look high by what you see looking through the barrel? Looking through the barrel will only get you close. This method can be tricky if head position is not correct. What rifle and caliber are you mounting the scope on? What type of rings and mounts are you using? With this information it will be much easer for us to help you with your setup. Welcome to the OT

No fires yet until the summer. Looking through the barrel is very close, but the center duplex cross is slightly higher. Its dialed completley to its lowest and still has the cross a little high compared to the barrel. I know for sure that I purchased the right rings for my VX2 4X12 40mm scope. The rings are leupold for Browning A-bolt. I have a Browning Titanian Mountain A-Bolt rifle. From the naked eye, the rifle and scope are beatiful with no un-levelness around the scope or whatsoever. It was tightenned down with a torque tool so I know that was done right as well. I could shim or raise the back part of the scope by putting in a piece of paper. Don't know if that is normal.

If you could, remove the ring caps and scope and using a straight edge(I use a torpedo level)span the top of the two lower ring halves to MAKE SURE they're level.  Doesn't take much to throw the scope adjustment off.  I have found them to be unlevel.

Thanks for the welcome.

The objective end of the scope is about   off the bbl. I know for sure that I have the lowest rings and is the correct rings. Rifle is Browning Titanium A-bolt. Scope is Leupold VX2 4X12AO 40mm. Rings are Leupold made for browning A-bolt low set up.

I don't have the packaging anymore so I do not know the product#. The mounts are Leupold made for A-bolt WSM.

I'd still check to make sure that the flat surfaces of both ring bottoms are level with each other.

Need to fire the rifle to accurately sight..eyeballs and tools are nice to get you on paper but consistent impact is the real deal.

Otherwise you will drive yourself crazy.

Amen to that.  But you may as well try and eliminate any mounting problems first.  I had two instances last yr on rifles where I could see daylight between my level and the flat surface of the front ring bottom.

There should be enough elevation to dial it in. If not, i'd suggest you check the number of turns from to to bottom elevation wise. You may have either a defective scope, or the windage is so far over that elevation adjustment is limited. If the latter is the case then you need to get some rings that will allow you to set the windage at a neutral count, and use the rings to center. This will allow for the greatest amount of elevation adjustment.

Got it fixed! I took it to the local gun shop where I purchased the rifle and they had to add a thin aluminum plate to the back to increase the height of the scope. They thought it was wierd too. They inspected every detail on the scope, rings, and rifle and all was the right parts and in great shape. Thanks for all your help.
