Hello, I am new to this forum, and I am in desperate need of some help on my next purchase. I own a Remington 700 (.308) Varmint. I currently have a (terrible) Nikon Buckmaster scope on it with the BDC. I hate the thing, and I am looking to buy a new scope for it. Everyone I know keeps trying to pressure me into buying a Leupold (I am actually really not all that fond of them), but I want something different. Something that isn't a household name like Leupold is. I have found a few that are looking very promising, but one problem... I cannot decide what is the best bang for my buck. I have a $1,000 spending limit (I'd like to keep it less than that if possible). A bit about what I use the rifle for: I use this rifle MOSTLY for target shooting (50-300 yards) as it is too heavy to hunt with, although this is soon to be my primary hunting rifle as I just don't like the way my Browning A bolt (.300 WM) handles. So, targert shooting, hunting, and low light... I have poor vision so I need something with stellar optics that will not be affected by my vision. I am looking at a few made by Pentax (I have never owned anything other than Pentax cameras so, if the glass in their new sport optics as it is in their lenses, I wouldn't be disappointed) I am specifically looking at the Pentax Gameseeker30 6-24x50, the Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56, a Trijicon AccuPoint 2.5-10x56, a Swarovski Nova (I can't find the same one right now) and lastly a Kahles Helia CL 3-10x50. Any help would be really appreciated. The sooner the better (Because time is almost up on the Kahles scope and I am thinking that'd be best but I want opinions) Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the OT forums!     Excellent     Regarding your quandary and the scopes mentioned, I'd grab the Kahles CL. They are VERY good scopes. Good glass trumps magnification. The Swaro Nova is an older model. Personally I love Swaro scopes (have three) and they have never let me down. I'd suggest checking out the Sample List here for great deals. Even a new Swaro Z3 3-10 X 42 falls within your budget. The above mentioned Trij Accupoint is quite good, but it's big and heavy. I don't know anything about the Pentax... never had one. Leupy's are ok...some better than others (IMO) but I also don't get wood over them. Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

With the Kahles, having the plex reticle, how hard is that to use at a multitude of ranges 50, 100, 150. 200, & 300? I don't believe it has the bullet drop. Is there a quick, simple, way to calculate this in the field?

Thanks

Pentax cameras and scopes are not the same quality. I would grab the Kahles out of the choices you list. They are very nice scopes. And the info that BugsNbows gave you is good info. And without a ballistic reticle you would need to dial in correction. A ballistic calculator would probably be best. But for a start there usually is drop info on the box of ammo. You can use that to start and when you are shooting you can fine tune it. Also do not skimp on rings. There is a reason that some cost more. Talley's are always a good choice.

maybe a sightron? vortex? minox? burris euro 30? --don't know if they come with a BDC or not--

i'm sure there are plenty that fill the bill on SWFA. oh yea don't forget the super snipers--

check over at the samples list and browse around --there should be some good deals there.

right now i like vortex vipers , right now i am playing around with the  minox ZA5s .

for 300M i don't think you going to need rally high magnification a simple 3-9x should work less you shooting something really small--

i would look hard at the vortex and sightrons ---i bet they make just what your looking for.

the vipers seem to be great all around bang for buck scopes.

Thanks

For those ranges for hunting, just sight it in at 200 or 250 yards.  If you are target shooting, just dial it in for each range.  I wouldn't personally use the hold over on a scope for target shooting.
