I am new to the game of sniper rifles and scopes so I am pretty much in the dark on scopes until I can get into a sniper course.  I have a savage 10 FLP/.308 and I am looking for a good scope.  Mind you I am a tight in the pocket LEO who is sending himself through a sniper course since my job is to CHEAP to send me.  I am solo on everything so I have to keep it reasonable or the wife will have me on the couch.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you can live with the fixed power, the Super Sniper is very hard to beat.  $300ish for the 10x rear focus...you can't do much better than that.

Do you need this for your duty rifle, or is this just something for general shooting?

The Super Sniper 10x is hard to beat for the money and I find that I can work with a fixed 10x. If however you feel that you would be better served with a variable power and only you can decide that based on what distances may be involved the most reasonably priced tactical that you will find is a Leupold Mark 4 PR 3-9 with duplex reticle, realize that they put the money in the target style turrets on this rather than the best glass but still quite useable and a fine choice. If however you choose the Super Sniper you will find that it is a top quality product and very reliable and user friendly also since it is a 30mm tube it should have more internal adjustment range. If most of your work will be 100 yds or less you need a variable if most of your work is 100 yds on out to 800 the fixed power simplifies some aspects and the SS has a nice mil dot that you would be able to range distance with although most will buy a laser rangefinder which is much faster and quite accurate.

Also worth consideration is IOR 6x42 - (top quality glass, very bright scope, very nice reticle), and  6x is more useful at  50 to 100yds  than a 10x (I wish they made a 6x Super Sniper) - This is the distance where most police confrontations will be - house across the street, bank half a block away etc and for that distance you could use a 1x  aimpoint or an EOTech the EOTech being a little more precise with a wider field of view and illuminated for night use.)  This should give you something to think about.
