So I own a rem 700 pss in a .308. I have a khales 4-10x42 on it. It was set up real nice by a buddy. But the optics are really only good out to about 300-400 yards.(for me) But I just bought a ruger 10/22 tatical rifle also. Do you guys recommend I take the Khales off the rem 700 and get a new scope for the rem 700 or should I keep the Khales on the rem 700 and purchase a new scope for the ruger 10/22. I am leaning toward getting a new scope for the rem 700. No clue on what scope is equal to the khales but with more power. Budget is $600......

I am shooting paper at 300-400 yards with the .308. Want to shoot 500 one day if I get good enough. the ruger is for shooting crows on my property at about 40-75 yrds.

Check out the Minox Z5 3-15's they are in your price range and serviceable.
Another option is to trade in your Kahles, combine that with your $600 and purchase another couple scopes for your two rigs.

I don't see why my Khales would not work on my 10/22. Sorry but you lost me on this. Do you not like Kahles scopes...... or will it not work on the 10/22???
I have also decided to re-scope the rem .308, it needs a more powerful scope anyways.

At about 45-75 yards Burris LRS Fullfield II Electro-dot will be very effective.

Kahles is one of the best scopes in the business, has some of the best glass around. It will work on your .22lr but remember the parralex might be a problem.I don't know why you are having a problem out to 300-400yrds,that should'nt be a problem. Can you give a little more info?

I tend to like the 5-20x50 Super Sniper or the 5-20x50 Trijicon Accupoint for the .308 and I tend to think that the Kahles would be way too nice of a scope to put on a 22. First the parallax on the Kahles is probably set at 100yds. You could certainly put the Kahles on the 22 but look through it at the distances you intend to shoot first to see if you like what you have if so great. You really are not going to get into a higher power scope than you are using in a good quality glass for $600. The only scope in that price range that I would go with is the 3-9 Super Sniper and that is less power than you now have but tactical knobs and a better reticle choice plus FFP and Mil Mil adjustments. The price jump from there to the 5-20x50 version is significant and they are back ordered currently Im waiting for my second one. If you plan to shoot no further than 500 to 600 yds the 50 moa of internal adjustment that the Trijicon Accupoint 5-20x50 has should work for you and the illlumination is first rate the glass is very nice and the controls are good but its over your price range. One other choice that you may wish to consider is the Sightron S III fixed 16x or fixed 20x as those will be better for you at longer distance but you would loose the ability to get onto close targets fast that a variable gives you. The S III variables are over your price range also. You are to the point where the correct answer is a Nightforce a US Optics S&B or Premier or better yet a Heinsoldt but you have not made that financial commitment yet. Once you realize that is the type of scope you are after you may be able to struggle into spending enought or trading into a Super Sniper 5-20 as SWFA does take trade in scopes. I tend to think that a Weaver rimfire 2-7 is plenty of scope for a 22 at least the way I use one.

I do not recall any 4-10x42 Kahles scopes. There is a 3-9x42.
I am not quite clear on what the problem with shooting beyond 300-400 yards with the Kahles is. 10x (if that is what it is) is plenty of power unless your targets are very small. Either way, before I make any specific recommendations: what is the application? target shooting? As far as the 22 goes, make sure you get a scope with parallax adjustable down to rimfire distances. Let me go look at my Kahles scope again to see the size. Yes small targets are to small through the scope for me at 10X power. I am really new to this stuff so I have to admit, I don't know a lot yet.
The Rem .308 I would like to shoot paper targets at 500-600 yards. The Rem .308 right now shoots great patterns at 400 yards. But the cross hairs cover the target. I kept all my shots in a paper plate size groups. But my shooting buddy kept it inside a 1 inch pattern. I know he shoots much better than I. But I want to make sure I get the right equipment to be able to shoot as good as he does one day. Ruger 10/22 is for the damn crows in my yard.

If your friend shoots consistent 1 inch groups at 400 yards, he is a magician, not a shooter.
Either way, it sounds like you need something for target shooting primarily. How much money are you willing to spend? ILya

Was your friend shooting 1"/400 yd groups with your rifle?
If so, do you want to sell that rifle? As others have said, rimfire scopes have parallax adjusted (usually) at 50 yds. and scopes for center fire rifles are adjusted at 100 yds. You'd be hard pressed to find better glass than that Kahles for $600, but you might find something with a reticle more suited to your needs and perhaps more magnification for your eyes. Any scope with a 'varmint' reticle will have finer crosshairs, specifically to prevent obscuring small targets, so you might think about going that route. Sightron makes scopes with very good optics in higher powers, something like an SII Big Sky 4-16x42 w/ fine reticle might work for you and they are around $600 and have adjustable objective and covered target turrets. The standard duplex reticle model is very dark and visible and the inner crosshairs aren't too thick and there is also a target dot model w/ fine crosshairs, but the dot might be a problem for you- usually target dots don't obscure too much. This Weaver Super Slam is a great scope and has a fine center crosshair and holdover points, as well... it also has a $50 rebate right now: http://swfa.com/Weaver-3-15x42-Super-Slam-Rifle-Scope-P40562.aspx |

Hey Mingler!
Pardon me for being such a rude, ill-mannered and butt-ugly (can't help that part) forum hanger- outer in my first reply to you, but... WELCOME TO OT!!! Anyhow, here's a link in another thread which mentions the Sightron w/dot reticle (mentioned in my 1st post.) The OP thinks the dot is just fine for targets: http://www.opticstalk.com/ultimate-10-22-scope_topic29624.html |
