I have a rifle that is a .270 Winchester and a large scope mounted on it. I was trying to sight it in at 50 yards today and I kept consistently hitting about a foot high of where I was aiming. I started to make the adjustment on the scope to correct for this inaccuracy and when I got about halfway there I realized that the scope was starting to get to the point where you can't adjust anymore. It was "bottoming out" if you will. The scope sits approximately 1.75 inches above the barrel and is obviously perfectly parallel with the barrel. I was wondering that if I got taller rings to hold the scope if it would help "relieve the stress" on the scope? So, if the scope sits higher, will it allow me to not have to adjust as far in order to sight in the rifle? Or will it make a very small difference and not be worth it?

It's kind of a stupid question that is hard to ask, so if you understood what I am asking, please respond.

Welcome to Optics Talk.

What scope is it? Size of objective?
What rings?

1.75" above the barrel is pretty darned HIGH, Friend. Typically, the lower to the barrel you can get it, without touching, is considered optimal.

The scope has a 50mm objective lense and the bottom of the obj lense is approx 1/8" away from touching the barrel.

You'd want to shim the mounts or get a canted mount rather than just change ring height if that is the issue. The Burris Signature mounts have changeable inserts that can help you get the scope closer to your zero before you use the turrets.

I would return the reticle to center in the scope and then use the Signature ring inserts to get it close. Well, I would investigate possible causes other than the scope mount, then I would do so.

Scope height change will not help you.
Depending on which rifle/mount configuration it is, you need to either shim the base or use adjustable rings of some sort.

Be sure the issue isn't your scope. You should have plenty of minutes for favorable adjustment with any conventional scope base and ring foundation.

Also be sure your base / ring combination presents a sight picture that is parallel with the bore.
