Hey folks.  I was just bore sighting my new 4 x 16 Nikon tactical.  I am using a PRS base with 0 moa and IOR 30mm steel tac rings.  When measuring my height of the center of the scope tube to the center of the bore axis, I come up with 2.2"   (that's two and two tenths if it's hard to read.)   Is that excessive or about normal?  I have a little clearance between the objective bell and rifle barrel but not sure if switching to low rings is a good idea or not.  I am just afraid that being farther above the bore robs the scope of "up" adjustability at longer ranges.  Is that true??   Is this enough to worry about or should I be OK?

Thanks in advance for the assist.

How much clearance between the barrel and the bottom of the objective housing, Kray?

1/2" is not excessive, but not ideal for me.

My new SS with a 42mm objective is about 1/4" off the barrel and makes it for a good cheek weld.

Are the IOR rings Mediums?

Just shoot it and see if you like it. You really shouldn't loose that much elevation, if any.

Thats why I always try to talk folks into a 20 MOA rail. It's there if you need it.

Usually a thicker piece of paper like a postcard is about min. provided the AO is not "thicker" on one side as your turn it, very few are exactly are centers.

Yes.  The IOR are mediums.  Do you think the low would work?   Not sure what they measure.  The med are .50"

By the way.  Thanks you guys for all of the help

Not sure if the lows would work or not. I've never even seen a set of IOR rings.

You have a side focus on the Nikon, so an AO isn't a consideration there.

How's the cheek weld? Are you having to look up too much?

Thats the real issue here, is your comfort when shooting.

Ballistics's tables call for 1.5" - 1.6" ideally for best trajectory. I don't know if you can get that with objectives over 44 mm. Has anyone got anything to add.

I am sort of  confused as to why mediums  wouldn't be closer.  Badger std's are higher than this (IOR) and I can't believe the PRS mount is any higher than any other???  Maybe it's the Nikon objective bell?  Are the loopys smaller?

Maximum internal adjustment is 50 MOA so if you are really going to be shooting distance you will definately need a plus 20 MOA base. As for the rings keep the scope as low as possibe but dont forget to allow room for lens caps.

I was a little surprised to find that the 4 x 16 only had 50 MOA adjustment.  I guess I should have done my homework a little better.  Not sure what range I will have the chance to utilize this scope at, but I do think the 20 MOA  base might be in order.  I do like this scope though.
