Hi there, 1st time posting on this site, 1st time buying a rifle and 1st time buying a scope.
Picking up a Winchester Wildcat .22 in a week or so (once I get my permit to acquire back, I live in Australia)

I have looked through the catalogue of the shop I'm buying from and noticed a couple of scopes in my price range (<$200 AUD).  Can't really afford a Leupold scope at this time (still at university)

Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 3-9x40  $170
Nikko Diamond:
4-12x42 1" $135
4.5-14x50 AO 1" $159
3-9x42 III No. 4 30mm $165.

I'm leaning towards he Bushnell scope because I think it is slightly better quality over the Nikko's.
I am wanting the scope for hunting (small game/game) and will start to get into competitions for some fun (they are for 4x scopes only im pretty sure, so kinda rules out the 4.5-14 scope)

So which one should I go with?

Thanks

i would put a fixed 4x nikon rimfire or weaver rimfire on it.  Perfect for 22LR.

Or if you wanted variable, I would go 2.5-7x28.

Keep it simple and you'll have a nice quick setup.

Good luck!

I´d choose a scope around 3-9x to 4-16x magnification ranges. There are two things I require from .22 optics: range compensation reticle and parallax adjustments.

The dots of the mildot reticle can be used for range compensation. For example I´ve set the scope of my .22 lr for 75m range. Now I can shoot to 25m and 50m ranges with the upper dot and to 100m range with the lower dot. Pretty simple, eh? Smile I previously owned Bushnell 3200 10x40 and at closer ranges you couldn´t get the reticle and the target sharp at the same time -> parallax adjustment resolves this problem.

You are on a pretty tight budget but there a some nice scopes in that price range. The problem is that these scopes might not have mildot nor adjustable parallax. Also consider  a used scope. Nikko Diamond 4.5-14x AO should be fairly nice scope for .22. I´d stay away from other Nikko´s which are not made in Japan.

Btw Wildcat looks like the same rifle as Russian Toz 78, a very common rifle in Finland. Excellent rifles for the price. The trigger is great and with some bedding work the rifle should be very very accurate... if you don´t happen to have a monday morning special in your hands. The build quality can vary in these rifles.

Well i got a Nikko Stirling Diamond 4-12x42 plex scope.
Only thing I don't like on it is the green rubber around the zoom dial, but there wasn't really that much else for the price range.
yet to sight it in.

Glad to hear you nabbed a Wildcat. My buddy's been trying to buy one but they are on backorder everywhere we've tried here in Canada. Sad
