I just bought a Remington 870 Express slug gun.  I have never used a slug gun before, but always have been interested.  Not having much experience with slug guns, leaves me with a bunch of questions.  I am wondering what kind of scope i should put on it, without breaking the bank.  Something that works very good, long lasting, and reasonable price.

I have several 12 ga slug guns equipped with Bushnell 3200 2-7 elites that have functioned perfectly and are reasonably priced

I like the bushnells also on a slug gun, though I like the circle x reticle.

Thanks for all the advice!    My next question is there any way i can mount my scope right on top and get the over and under mounts so that i can still use my iron sights on the barrel?

You can, though they are problematic.  If you choose a scope with a low end of say 1x or 2x there really is no need for the iron sights.

the see thru mounts lift your head off the stock and accentuate recoil ... want to mount scop as low as possible for a proper alignment

With the 870 cheek weld is important. If you get your cheek up off the stock you can get smacked pretty good. That is the only negative thing I can think of regarding the 870's I have.
If you are looking to save a bit you can look at the many styles of Weaver type base and ring sets. http://swfa.com/Weaver-No-Gunsmith-Saddle-Mount-P10534.aspx
http://swfa.com/Weaver-Detachable-Top-Mount-1-Rings-C1342.aspx
The linked set up will run you under $40 and will serve the 870 well. You don't need to go overboard because it isn't a tack driver.

The rings remove quickly if needed. I have never had to remove a scope to use iron sights in over forty years of hunting, though.

I assume you have a rifled barrel with rifled sights.  This is what I have.  I had a gunsmith mount a scope mount to the reciever and I use leupold QR rings so if something happens to the scope in the field, I can remove it quickly and continue hunting.  The only issue with this is that if you plan on swapping out barrels with a regular shotgun barrel, it will make it more difficult to aim down the barrel and use a pin sight.  Also with a reciever mount, you should consider pinning or shimming the barrel.

You will get great service from a Weaver V3 without breaking the bank.  I used one on a 12 ga slug gun for years.  Very clear for the price and holds zero despite the recoil of the slug gun.
