This is my first post to this forum.  This forum has been very educational to me.  IMO this forum has the best practical optics information on the net.

I have a Savage 12 Low Profile chambered in .223 remington.  I use the rifle for target shooting and varmint hunting 50/50.  I am looking for a scope in the $300 - $500 dollar range.

Based upon my rifle and application, I am leaning towards a magnification range of 4-16x.  Objective lens of approximately 40mm.  Does this sound correct?

I am open to any manufacurer.  I currently own Bushnell and Leupold scopes.

Could you please help me with my decision?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Glad your here. Thanks on behalf of Optics Talk for your kind words.

We really do have a great forum here....

Welcome to The OT!

I think your interest in the 4-16x range is ideal.

Will a standard duplex type reticle be OK or are you wanting a ranging type reticle?

Just for an example from Burris, the top reticle is a Standard Duplex type reticle and the other is a ranging style reticle.

Other scope manufactures have there versions of both reticles, but one is for basic hunting or target use, the other allows you to "hold over" your shots using the slashes.

You would zero your rifle @ 100 yards or so then use the slashes to shoot at extended distances.

I am comfortable with the standard duplex.  I guess I prefer "fine" crosshairs.

Hey Pronghorn......I have a savage very much like yours, I chose the 4x16x40 4200 elite scope and have loved it for target/varmint use. Good optics, and great tracking and holding POI, price is real reasonable also. I did however just get a conquest 4.5x14x44 and would have to say this is a sweet scope also with side parallax adjustment. This forum is one of the friendliest and knowledgable optics sites on the net. Good hands on and eyes thru evaluations on scopes with a lot less brand bias than available elsewhere.

Cheaptrick, Focus,

Thanks for the great suggestions.

I have read each of the suggestions provided and now I am in the process of creating my short list.

Currently it looks like this

  1. Sightron II Big Sky 4-16X42 (SS)
  2. Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16X40
  3. Super Sniper 10X40 (30mm)

Which of these three would mount better/worse than the others?  Any suggestions for rings and bases?  I will probably favor the scope with the lowest mount.

My wife told me she would buy whichever scope I pick. (Birthday)

I feel like a kid in a candy store.  Don't quite know which to pick.

Thanks again,

Pronghorn
